World No Tobacco Day
World No Tobacco Day is May 31 and the Tobacco Free Lake County program will be marking the occasion with lawn signs about smoke-free cars, smoke-free homes and smoke-free lawns at Midlakes, Zion and North Shore health centers as well as the Belvidere Medical Building. Also, patients and employees can stop by a display table from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on that day at 3010 Grand Avenue, Waukegan, and test their knowledge about tobacco use in exchange for a small gift.

Recognizing Warning Signs of Suicide
The Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center is observing Mental Health Month in May by focusing on suicide prevention. Suicide is a serious public health problem in Lake County, where 52 suicides took place in 2012, more than twice the number of homicides reported that year (which was 25). Nationwide, suicide is also a leading cause of death among youth. In 2012, there were seven suicide deaths in Lake County among children up to age 20. Continued. |

The Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center is reminding the community that spring is the time of year that can put substantial stress on septic systems,  especially older systems. This is due to an abundance of water in the environment that must absorb into the soil or travel over the landscape.
There are, however, some simple things that you can do to help your septic system work better during the wet times of the year and year round. Continued. |
Green Fair for Employees |
 Lake County Health Department employees marked Earth Day and learned how they can be more green in their everyday lives at the annual Green Fair organized by the Health Department Green Team.
An arborist was available to talk about trees. Other presenters included a representative from the Solid Waste Agency of Lake  County, several volunteer master gardeners with the University of Illinois Extension office and a Health Department dietitian who demonstrated how to reduce your carbon footprint while maintaining a nutritious diet. |
