Salute to Veterans
Veterans Day reminds us of all the veterans living and working in Lake County. The Health Department offers a program for military personnel and veterans, including those recently returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and their families. Called Lake-McHenry Veterans and Family Services, the program offers help to military personnel, veterans and their families facing challenges before, during and after deployments. The program includes peer-to-peer counseling by vets who have been there. Watch this 5-minute video clip.
A Lake County youth was recognized as a young health activist through her volunteer work in two youth programs at the Health Department.

Irene T. Pierce recently announced to the Lake County Board of Health that she is retiring.
Pierce began her tenure with the Health Department as the Associate Director of Medical Services in 1990. She was the Director of Primary Care Services for 13 years before being appointed executive director in 2008.
Her retirement is effective in March and a national search is being conducted for a replacement.
The Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center is one of 52 recipients of federal grant money to help children, ages 3 through 21, who are suffering from psychological trauma.
The grant provides $400,000 annually for four years to help children, particularly those of military families.
Public health nurse Jeunese Forchin of Gurnee is the recipient of a sought-after college loan repayment program through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
In exchange, she is working with underserved populations, namely a new program at the Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center that assists new, young mothers with learning to care for their babies.
