School Year Update

As the weather gets nicer, it comes time for the school year to wind down which means Club M ends for the summer.

On May 6th, the Closing Party for all matches and their families was held at the Mount Pleasant Middle School Cafeteria. We had a luau themed party and recognized the accomplishments of our senior mentors from both Iowa Wesleyan College and the Mount Pleasant High School. Our senior mentors from Iowa Wesleyan College had been with us for four years which is 8 semesters. They have contributed a lot to Club M over the years and we are sad to see them go but we wish them all well in the next stage of their lives.

On May 13th, the Closing Party for all matches was held for Winfield-Mount Union. In its current form, Club M has been operating for three years in Winfield and we were able to recognize six senior mentors who have been with the program for all three years. We definitely look forward to seeing what they do next after high school and wish them all the best.

Congratulations to all our seniors! We have loved having you serve as mentors at Club M over the years. We look forward to having the rest of our mentors and mentees back with us in the fall and we hope that everyone has a good summer.

 Table Affair Fundraiser Update

In less than one month, Club M will be hosting its inaugural Table Affair fundraiser on Thursday, June 11, 2015 at the Mount Pleasant High School. The keynote speaker will be V.J. Smith, Author of "The Richest Man in Town." Catering will be provided by Indian Hills Culinary Institute. We are looking forward to a memorable evening in support of youth mentoring. We would like to thank all those who have currently signed up to serve as table hosts for the event. Your support is invaluable to making this a successful event and we appreciate your involvement and support of the program.

For those of you who are serving as table hosts, please make sure to update your contact information with Chelsea White at chelsea.white@iwc.edu so that you receive emails/phone calls as the event approaches. We want to make sure that all of our hosts feel comfortable with the plan for the event.

A table hosts meeting will be held on Monday, May 18th at the Henry County Extension Office at 10:00 am for all those who are available to attend.

We would also like to acknowledge the generous support of the Mount Pleasant Hy-Vee who has agreed to sponsor our dinner by donating the food for the event.

Be a Successful Mentor

Iowa Mentoring Partnership has some great information on how to maintain a good relationship with your mentee as well as the impact that mentoring can have on youth:

1) Here is a tip to help foster a good relationship with a mentee. Always remember to be positive, patient, dependable, honest, and sincere with them.

2) Here is a fun activity for mentors to do with their mentees. Take a trip together using your imagination! Find fun facts, pictures, books, and information online about a fun place to go and make your own scrapbook or travel guide!

3) Here is a bit of advice for new mentors. Be sure and go into the relationship with an open mind. You might learn something from your mentee!

4) Here is an important and valuable fact. According to MENTOR, at-risk young adults who had a mentor are more likely to aspire to enroll in and graduate from college than those who did not have a mentor (76 percent versus 56 percent).

For more useful information about the importance of youth mentoring and how to be a successful mentor, please check out the Iowa Mentoring Partnership Facebook page.
