This school year, we will be having mentors mentoring after school on Wednesdays in Winfield-Mount Union, after school on Wednesdays in Mount Pleasant, and during 7th hour at the Mount Pleasant Middle School. We will also be holding our Mentor for a Day event again this year which will be planned by the students in Developmental Psychology at Iowa Wesleyan. Back to School Update

We have kicked off another great school year in both Winfield-Mount Union and Mount Pleasant!

On September 10th, 2014, Club M Wednesdays had its first meeting in Winfield-Mount Union from 2:00 to 3:00 pm. In Winfield-Mount Union, we have high school mentors mentoring youth in grades K-5.

On September 10th, 2014, Club M Wednesdays had its first meeting in Mount Pleasant in the cafeteria at the Mount Pleasant Middle School from 3:30 to 4:30 pm. In Mount Pleasant, we have high school and college mentors mentoring youth in grades K-8.

We have also partnered with the Mount Pleasant Middle School to allow 7th hour mentoring of youth who do not require academic support during that time period. Our 7th hour mentors are going to be starting within the next two weeks.

The Developmental Psychology course
at Iowa Wesleyan is mentoring with us again this semester for their academic service learning component and some of the mentors are planning our Mentor for the Day event which will take place later this semester.

Developing Trust in Your Mentoring Relationship

According to a post on the Search Institute, the conditions that foster trust in a mentoring relationship include:

1) Being reliable, consistent, patient, and persistent with your mentee.

2) Encouraging your mentee to take the lead in deciding what you will do together.

3) Telling your mentee what positive qualities or behaviors you see in her or him.

4) Having fun together and creating shared memories.

5) Listening to cultivate understanding-rather than only giving advice.

6) Keeping your conversations with your mentee private-not telling parents or teachers the details of your conversations.

7) Not pushing your mentee to achieve goals you have set.

8) Being trustworthy yourself by keeping your word.
