Last Days of Club M
Autism Awareness Month
 
The month of April is  Autism Awareness Month.
Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and affects a person's ability to communicate and interact with others. Autism is defined by a certain set of behaviors and is a "spectrum disorder" that affects individuals differently and to varying degrees.
  

Here are some signs to look for in the children in your life:

  • Lack of or delay in spoken language
  • Repetitive use of language and/or motor mannerisms (e.g., hand-flapping, twirling objects)
  • Little or no eye contact
  • Lack of interest in peer relationships
  • Lack of spontaneous or make-believe play
  • Persistent fixation on parts of objects

Spring is here and Club M is excited for warm and sunny weather! School-based matches and Club M meetings are starting to wind down with the  anticipation of summer.
  
Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time this year! We hope you realize what a tremendous impact you have on the youth in Henry County!
  
We hope everyone who volunteers know how truly wonderful, appreciated, and invaluable they are! Thank you!  We're looking forward to Club M in the 2014-15 school year!

 

Closing Your Match

 
As the year comes to a close, our Club M school matches will be closing as well.  The way the relationship ends can shape what your mentee thinks about and learns from the experience.  Here are a few general tips for parents and mentors to create a smooth and healthy match closure.

In General:
  • Let your mentee know several weeks before your last meeting so they have time to talk about the end of the relationship.
    
    
  • Be honest and supportive with your mentee.

 

  • Talk about your thoughts and feelings for the mentee and encourage him to do the same.

 

  • Remain positive with your mentee.

 The school year is winding down!  Please note these last Club M dates:
 
  • Wednesday Club M in Mt. Pleasant:  April 23
  • Monday Club M in Mt. Pleasant:  April 28
  • Winfield Mt Union Club M:  May 7

What a fun year we have had!  Thanks to all of our mentors and mentees for helping to make Club M a success!!  We will see you in September!!
