Shook Kicks Off Annual

United Way Campaign

The relationship between Shook and the United Way goes back many decades. Historically, more than 50% of our employees donate funds to their local United Way organizations, further demonstrating our commitment to our communities.

This year's fundraising efforts began with a kickoff luncheon in Dayton where Terri Leputa (Associate Vice President of United Way of the Greater Dayton Area) shared valuable information on the organization.

Some new local initiatives include working with Veteran's Affairs to increase the care of our veterans and helping our community obtain proper healthcare benefits. Another focus this year is "collective impact," which is a collaboration of multiple United Way regions design to solve specific social problems. In other words, working to help overcome the root of the issues vs. simply treating the symptoms.

Similar luncheons will take place in each of our offices and at major job sites in the next few weeks as we look to support all of the communities in which we work.

Wishing Judi Must

Well in Retirement

This past month, we said goodbye to a wonderful member of our accounting team, Judi Must. Judi began her journey with Shook in 1997. She was hired in to take over payroll processing. Soon enough Judi had mastered her job. In 2004, Judi obtained her Associate Degree in accounting and moved into what would be her final role with the company, accounting manager. Responsible for numerous aspects of accounting as well as some aspects of human resources, Judi was our Jack-of-all-trades. She had grown to be a well-loved and appreciated member of our team.

Although we will miss her, Judi has worked hard and earned this opportunity to enjoy her retirement years with her family and-more specifically-her grandbabies! She is looking forward to nothing more than being a full-time grandma.

All of us at Shook wish Judi the very best in her retirement.

Within this space, I often allude to the manner in which we run our business... What we have come to call "the Shook Way."

Earlier in February, the Shook family gathered for our 2015 Annual Meeting. As part of this company-wide celebration, we acknowledged two individuals who were not present: Mike Eckley and Judi Must, both of whom recently retired. Mike was with Shook for 28 years, while Judi served 17 years with us.

I forever will be impressed and thankful for the tenure that Mike and Judi had with our company. However as I looked across the crowd, I was struck by how many people are on a similar trajectory in their own careers. In a recent client presentation, I was able to share that the average tenure of Shook's 50+ project managers and project superintendents is 17 years with the company (in addition to an average 25 years in the industry!).

I believe we breed that type of loyalty by creating an environment where people enjoy going to work every day. At Shook, we accomplish this by asking our employees to show up each day and collaborate with our design and subcontracting partners. We accomplish this by asking them to honestly and fairly serve our clients. We do this because we think it is the right way to operate our business--the Shook Way. With how difficult this business can be from day to day, solving complex problems and navigating different personalities and agendas... Could there be any other way?
