Dayton Metro Library Segment II Projects Underway

Dayton Metro Library is in the design phase of its $29 million Segment II projects. This segment includes the expansion of an existing library and construction of five new branches, all ranging from 12,000 SF to 25,000 SF in size.

This segment is part of a larger four-segment project, funded by a $187 million bond issue passed by voters in November 2012. The system-wide re-envisioned use of library space includes more room for computer labs and meetings spaces, as opposed to large physical collections.

Construction of Segment II is expected to be complete August 2017. Shook Construction is providing construction management services.

Shook project team members include Eric Doench, Jaron Develbiss and Josh Mays.

We have developed a culture here at Shook to take the client's best interest to heart-always. At the end of the day, it is important to us not only to have a well-built project but also a satisfied customer. This involves doing whatever it takes. We call this the Shook Way.

Recently, the Associated General Contractors of Ohio (AGC of Ohio) presented us a Build Ohio award for one of our projects: the six-story patient tower addition at Mercy Health's St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center in Boardman, Ohio. The AGC of Ohio recognized the project as this year's best construction management project in the state of Ohio.

The success of this project was especially gratifying because of what I believe it reflects about the culture we have established and maintained here at Shook. The St. Elizabeth project was an extremely difficult job. Of the total 184,000 SF of new hospital space, 150,000 SF was built on top of an active hospital, which included the existing surgery suite. In addition, the original structure was not designed originally to support this vertical addition, so we had to work in the existing hospital on nights and weekends to reinforce the structure and have the hospital ready for surgeries every Monday morning. This meant countless overtime hours, weekend work and continuous coordination with the hospital's clinical staff. We completed the project on time and on budget and once again walked away from the project site with a satisfied client.

So what does a job well done have to do with culture? An FMI white paper on business development has been circulating the company recently. One of my key take-aways spoke to the significance of corporate culture: "Companies with a strong culture have greater success driving out positive relationship behaviors to front-line employees, and reaching those who have an opportunity to impact a client's experience...if employees on the front line believe in what they are doing and care about the client, then the actions they take during 'moments of truth' can enhance the client's view of the company."

I know the St. Elizabeth project was challenging for our project team. I know that each had days when it was a struggle to maintain a positive attitude and do whatever it took: the Shook Way. This Build Ohio award and, more significantly, a delighted client are the ultimate recognition that our team was able to meet successfully those 'moments of truth' head-on. This is what we strive for, ask of our people each day and is something truly worth celebrating.
