Reid Hospital Groundbreaking

In March, Reid Hospital celebrated the groundbreaking of their medical office building in Greenville, OH. The 34,000 SF, single-story complex will be home to cardiology, orthopedics and ENT specialty practices.

With an estimated cost of $6.6 million, construction will be complete March 2015.

Having worked exclusively with Reid Hospital for the last year, Jeff Eckley and Randy Shepherd will serve as project manager and project superintendent, respectively. Shook is providing construction management services on the project.

Awarded Bethel Schools Project

Shook Construction, along with our joint venture partner Touchstone CPM, was awarded the Bethel Local Schools project in Miami County, OH. We will provide construction management services for the additions and renovations to the district's existing K-12 campus.  The $22 million project calls for a single-story, 62,000 SF addition, upgrades to the existing K-12 campus and site work, including a new athletic complex and widening of State Route 201 in order to improve safety and traffic flow.

The project will be 100% locally funded, with a bond issue going on the ballot May 2014. Construction will be complete in time for the 2016/2017 school year.

Suzanne Whisman will serve as project manager alongside Mary Runyon and John Gudorf, the project superintendents.

Shook Touchstone is a seven-year-old joint venture focused on State of Ohio work for the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission.  Our team has completed nearly $600 million of work together.

Working with Meijer Again

We are excited to work with Meijer again!

Meijer recently selected Shook as one of three contractors to provide construction management services on a five-year, task-order contract.  In the first year, Shook will construct four new Meijer stores and remodel two existing Meijer facilities.

From 1991 to 2007, Shook also provided general contracting and construction management services on 54 Meijer projects in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio. Our level of service was not forgotten among the Meijer ranks, which played a big role in our favorable consideration and ultimate selection.

Because of his exemplary work in years past on the Meijer projects, Mark Grasso will serve as the account executive. Mark will oversee a team of preconstruction and construction professionals in the delivery of this work.

We are off to an exciting start this year with more than $200 million in new projects awarded. This influx of new work, coupled with an already healthy backlog, sets us up for planned, healthy growth.

Over the last several years, we've made strategic decisions and long-term investments to better position ourselves for long-term growth. Between those investments and the growing construction market, we are beginning to reap a harvest.

In 2012, we proactively restructured our business model to focus on specific market channels rather than geography. While our Dayton, Cleveland, Indianapolis and Raleigh offices remain in place, we now operate with healthcare, education, industrial, mission critical and water resources market segments. This change enables our personnel to pursue and serve clients who best align with their experience, capabilities and best practices.

In addition, we regularly make significant internal investments in our technology and in our people. These have included expansion of the preconstruction staff, a heightened emphasis on field and office technology and the adoption of Building Information Modeling (BIM) into standard project operations. We've also significantly increased employee training, ranging from LEAN/Six Sigma to BIM certification to graduate-level business studies. Making such investments keeps us ahead of the knowledge curve and competitive among other construction firms without losing sight of our core value-to meet and exceed client expectations.

Our focused market channel approach and continuous improvement initiatives have enabled us to win work with notable organizations, including Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Meijer, Inc. and The Ohio State University.

The common thread with each of these clients selecting Shook has been our company's core expertise within each of their industries and the innovative technologies that have become a standard piece of the services that we provide.

With the steady increase in new work and growth of personnel, we're excited for a big year in 2014.
