Shook Organizes Fundraiser

Shook Construction was involved in raising nearly $15,000 towards a cancer center renovation project in Warren, OH!

Shook partnered with the Humility of Mary Health Partners (HMHP) Foundation to host the First Annual R.O.S.E. Club Appreciation Bash. The event was centered around the annual Ohio State vs. Michigan football game and was provided as a thank-you to members of the R.O.S.E. (Reaching Out, Serving Everyone) Club, the hospital's internal foundation donor group.

The party included traditional tailgate food, drinks and raffle prizes and was attended by more than 200 people from the R.O.S.E. Club and the St. Elizabeth's Boardman construction project team. The event was free for all attendees and raised nearly $15,000 towards the renovation of the Humility of Mary's St. Joseph's Cancer Center.

Shook Construction is currently working with HMHP as construction manager on the St. Elizabeth's Boardman Patient Tower Addition project. We are proud to serve as both a construction partner and community partner to this outstanding organization.

Andy Goetz Receives
Outstanding CM Award

Andy Goetz, vice president of healthcare and education, was selected to receive the Subcontractors Association of Western Ohio (SAWO) Outstanding Construction Manager Award for his quality reputation on all project work and specifically for his work on the GE Aviation EPISCENTER in Dayton, OH. The criterion for this award is meeting a high standard of fair business practices and Andy meets this goal every day.

The purpose of the SAWO's Outstanding Leadership Awards program is to recognize individuals and/or firms that demonstrate their belief in fair business practices and apply that belief to the betterment of the construction industry. Individuals and companies are elected for their respective award through a nomination and balloting process that includes the entire construction industry within the region.

Congratulations to Andy on maintaining Shook's values of always treating our clients and subcontractors fairly and providing a high quality project.

City of Canton's Water Reclamation Facility Project

In January 2014, Shook Construction was the low bidder on the $46.2 million Canton Water Reclamation Facility (WRF) Phosphorous / Total Nitrogen project in Canton, OH. The main focus of the project is to convert the facility to a membrane biological reactor (MBR) activated sludge process.  Installation of the $29 million membrane equipment, purchased separately by the owner, brings the total project value to $75 million.  The activated sludge process is designed to biologically remove phosphorous and total nitrogen. Once complete, it is believed the Canton WRF will be the largest bioreactor membrane facility in the world.

The project also consists of process improvements to the preliminary treatment facility, conversion of existing clarifiers to equalization basins, modifications to the solids handling and dewatering process, post aeration improvements and upgrades to the existing plant infrastructure.

Shook's project team includes Project Manager Dan Wolking, Project Superintendent John Kunkler and Project Engineer Calvin Lemon.

Excerpts from Shook's 2014 Annual Meeting.

Why am I so excited about celebrating our future?

First, there's our strong foundation which is comprised of 87 years of experience and history, which includes strong financials, strong people with extensive experience, an abundance of young talent and a family culture that breeds entrepreneurism.

Second, we serve a higher purpose. We don't just build treatment plants, hospitals, schools, factories and data centers. We make clean water, create healing environments, build facilities that enable Americans to manufacture the things we depend on every day, create the ability for you to stay connected with your loved ones wherever they are and create learning environments that give future generations the education we all treasure. Every bit of the work we do serves a higher purpose and because of that, our work will always be valued by our society.

What is the role of each Shook associate in celebrating our future?

Prevent CEO-itis: I have asked our associates for minimum B.S. and maximum accurate information so that I can make effective decisions that support and move this company forward.

Step Up: The next CEO of Shook is already amongst us. I have asked our staff never to hesitate to do and stand up for what is right for this organization.

Have fun along the way:  The work we do is not a sprint; it's a marathon! It is important that we enjoy the journey.

Love and honor your Shook family AND your own family: We all work hard. We all work long hours. When the time finally comes to go home to family, be there completely--physically and mentally.

We have spent time honoring the past, especially my mentors and their respective legacies: precision, passion and planning. As we move into the future, what will be my legacy? What will be the mark I leave as I guide this company moving forward into this exciting future? Win, lose or draw, I hope I am remembered for my HUSTLE!

My first memory was Pete Rose sliding head-first into second base at Crosley Field stretching a single into a double during the summer of 1963. Pete was never the fastest, nor the strongest player; but the way he played the game is what made him great. By pouring everything he had into it, he created extraordinary results out of the ordinary. I have never been accused of being the sharpest blade in the drawer. But my hope is that if I continue to hustle every single day, I'll too turn ordinary into extraordinary!

Finally, our Chairman Frank Klein has dealt me a great hand. It's time to truly grow this company both carefully and profitably. At the same time, continue to get a little better at what we do every single day.

At the end of the day, the leader sets the example and guides the organization. Rest assured, I will do just that. But more importantly, it is the Shook employees that power this company.

Indeed! All of us are stronger than one of us!
