New Water Resources Projects
Shook continues to aggressively pursue work at water and wastewater treatment plants, just as we have since 1926.  Our most recent awards include:
 
Westerville Water Treatment Plant Improvements
Shook is providing construction services for the $10.5 million improvements at the water treatment plant in Westerville, Ohio. 
 
With over 20 years of construction experience, Kyle Canon is serving as Shook's project manager. James Johnson, project superintendent, has over 35 years of experience, including over $100 million in water/wastewater treatment plants.
 
Wheeling Water Treatment Plant
This $30.5 million project involves filtration upgrades and general improvements at the water treatment plant in Wheeling, West Virginia.
 
The Shook project team includes: Eric Rees, project manager; Bryan Greiwe, project superintendent; and Calvin Lemon and Lance Harris, project engineers.  Eric has served as a Shook project manager for over 18 years, managing over $125 million worth of work. Bryan has spent his entire 35-year career working on water resource-type projects.  
 
Calvin and Lance have spent their careers at Shook working on over $120 million in water/wastewater treatment plants.

Bernie Ashyk Receives Award

Bernie was awarded the Victor C. Smith Professional Constructor Award for his service to the American Institute of Constructors (AIC), as well as to the general construction community. This award was given at the AIC annual forum in Scottsdale, Arizona in April.
  
Bernie has served on AIC's Northern Ohio Chapter Board of Directors for 15 years (including a year as president) and he has seved on the AIC National Board of Directors for over 10 years.
  
With over 40 years of experience, Bernie has spent 27 years working at Shook Construction and has been an intricate part of many of our water resource projects in northeast Ohio. Bernie is the assistant regional manager in our Cleveland office.
Shook's Wellness Program
Shook Wellness LogoShook recently wrapped up its wellness program's pilot year. We are proud of all that we accomplished. With 55% of our employees enrolled in the program, we saw many make tremendous healthy lifestyle changes. 
 
Several employees kicked their tabacco habits. Many completely altered their eating habits. Our participants lost 330 pounds during our Pump-It-Up Challenge alone (a 12-week program focusing on exercising and whole nutrition) - not to mention their progress throughout the full year!
 
To reinforce the program during the year, we offered employees biometric screenings, four educational lunches, three challenges (including prizes for the winners!), WellTime (a paid hour each week for healthy activities) and rewards for successfully completing minimum program requirements.
 
We are excited for our second year, affectionately called Shook Wellness 2.0, with additional committee members and brand new events and challenges!

With Independence Day not far behind us, we wanted to take a moment to celebrate America and her strength. This great nation has seen its fair share of ups and downs. Through it all, we continue to prove ourselves unwavering and resilient--a nation united.
 
We are starting to finally see improvements from the recent economic recession. The unemployment rate is dropping. The housing market is improving.
  
The construction industry also is showing signs of recovery. Owners across the board are starting to invest once again in capital improvements. Our industrial market channel has grown in the last several months. The healthcare, education and water resource markets continue to see their shares of building opportunities.
 
 Shook Construction has restored its backlog to healthy pre-recession levels and everyone is busy.
 
God bless this great country and each and every one of you as we work together to rebuild our construction industry!
