Shook Nominated for
National Safety Award
AGC 2013The Ohio chapter of Associated General Contractors recognized Shook's continuous commitment to safety and effort with its Construction Safety and Excellence Award (CSEA) for the Heavy Division with 300,001-700,000 man hours. As a recipient of this award, the AGC of Ohio submitted Shook Construction as its nominee for consideration to receive the AGC National Safety Award in its category.

The Ohio award was based on company management commitment, active employee participation, safety training, work site hazard identification and control, and safety program innovation.

Construction companies that do well carrying out their safety programs earn this recognition from the CSEA. Each participant's commitment to safety, occupational health management, and risk control is evaluated. Shook is committed to eliminating hazardous conditions that may cause harm to anyone working on our construction sites, in our offices, or in any other facility under our care and custody. It is an honor that the judges recognize Shook's continuous effort to keep employees safe.

This award is a tribute to all of Shook's employees because we believe that safety is the responsibility of every employee and we emphasize that no task is too small to be performed safely!

Shook is dedicated to the culture that "Safely is the only way to work"!

Project Managers Receive Recognition

BX Dayton - PM AwardsFour of our project managers received recognition for outstanding project management through the Dayton Builders Exchange. The award was received by Shook Touchstone project managers:  Matt Huelsman, Suzanne Whisman, Tim Kneuve and Bruce Perry.

In early 2008, these Shook Touchstone PM's stepped up to the challenge of managing one of Dayton's largest projects in recent history. The project involved completing 10 of the Dayton Public School's Segment II schools , which were in various stages of construction from punch list to starting footers and taking on a plethora of loose ends.  They also took over the management and construction of an additional 11 schools in Dayton Public School's Segment III, which were in various stages of design.
These four PM's rose to the occasion working with two co-owners (Dayton Public Schools and Ohio Facilities Construction Commission, formerly known as the Ohio School Facilities Commission), 11 design firms, over 140 subcontractors, dozens of communities and multiple jurisdictional agencies to complete the 21 schools.  The schools represent over 1,800,000 SF and over $235 million construction cost in only 4 years' time, within the schools budget and with no subcontractor claims being submitted.

From the onset, the PM's treated the contractors with fairness and respect. They were able to improve the pay application and change order process, improve subcontractor trust, efficiently coordinate project sites and open up meaningful communications with and between contractors.

In addition, the PM's managed the demolition of 34 existing schools dealing satisfactorily with many issues with the EPA and RAPCA.

Under their leadership, EDGE participation was increased from 6% to 26% and 2.9 million man-hours were logged without safety citations or violations. Of the Segment III schools, eight were certified LEED gold and three were LEED silver.

In the end, Dayton Public Schools is the first and only urban district in the State of Ohio to complete all their building segments to the satisfaction of the Ohio School Facilities Commission.

Congratulations to Tim, Matt, Suzanne and Bruce for your never waivering commitment to the success of your projects!

Aullwood Honors Two of Our Own

Doench-Meckely-AullwoodShook's Eric Doench and Mike Eckley were honored with a dedication of the new maintenance shop at the Aullwood Audobon Center and Farm.

Eric and Mike have each served on the Aullwood board and were involved the construction process of the new Farm Discover Center, as well as upgrading 12 farm buildings. Aullwood was gracious enough to host Shook Construction's corporate annual meeting at this new farm facility this month. It was at this meeting that Charity Krueger, executive director of Aullwood, thanked the gentlemen for their contributions and dedicated the new "Eric Doench and Mike Eckley Maintenance Shop" in their honor.

Message from our CEO

Frank Klein

-Frank J. Klein

We recently held our corporate annual meeting, which brings together all of our employees to reconnect and receive an update on the company.

This year's theme was "Reaching 100 Years and Beyond."  I am committed to see Shook Construction reach our 100th birthday in 2026 and to set the stage for continued growth afterwards.  In order to get there, we must take steps now to ensure our success.

We spent time updating everyone on our strategic plan, which I referenced in this publication last quarter.  Ken Herr and Bill Whistler presented the purpose of a strategic plan, as well as our short- and long-term goals.

As part of the construction industry, safety is a subject at the forefront of everyone's minds. Gary Auman, a local attorney, discussed unavoidable employee misconduct defense.

Investing in the wellbeing of our employees is always important to us.  Jeff DeRamus provided an update of our new corporate wellness program and the challenges and successes to date.

We concluded the meeting with the State of the Company Address, in which we celebrated the successes of 2012 and looked to the future in 2013 and beyond.

I am truly inspired by the passion of our employees to provide exceptional service in everything they do.
