MAY 2014

GiveBIG and Support the Farm Fund!
Support local nonprofits and the Co-op's Farm Fund.

The Seattle Foundation's GiveBIG is a one-day, online charitable giving event to inspire people to give generously to nonprofit organizations who make our region a healthier and more vital place to live. In 2014, the event raised $14.5 million in 24 hours!

Several Bellingham and Whatcom County nonprofits are registered for the GiveBIG event. Find local nonprofits registered for the event by searching for "Bellingham" at the GiveBIG website.

Although the Co-op's Farm Fund is not registered for GiveBIG, Farm Fund donations will be gratefully accepted at any Co-op register on May 5 (or on any day you shop). One hundred percent of all Farm Fund donations directly benefit local, sustainable agriculture projects and farms, the Co-op does not use a single penny for overhead.

When you donate to the Farm Fund you are actively participating in our local food system! If you missed the introduction of the 2015 Farm Fund grant projects, read the story in our April 2015 newsletter.

EVENT
Bike to Work and School Day
Friday, May 15, 7 to 9:30 am
Cordata Celebration Station
(in front of the Cordata store)

Join the 18th annual Bike to Work and School Day and celebrate the most energy-efficient form of transportation ever devised--the bicycle!

These lovable goofs will be treating cyclists to a delicious goodie from the Co-op bakery and a fruit snack for quick grab-n-go energy replenishment. We're also giving away blinking safety lights (while supplies last) to increase visibility of bikers on the road. Be seen and ride safely!

See the full list of Celebration Stations here.

Considering an Electric Bicycle?

Ever wonder how easy your ride would be with a little boost of electric power? Michael Graham Richard was recently asked by treehuger.com founder, Graham Hill, for an electric bike recommendation. Richard turned to an expert in the field, Court Rye of ElectricBikeReview.com, for some advice.

Read Richard's interview with Court Rye and see if you should consider electrifying your ride.

Documentary Explores Future of Food

"America's Shrinking Farms," Collectively's 18-minute mini documentary about the future of food, takes you on tours of a working cricket farm, a vertical farm (it's pink!), and behind the scenes at the alternative protein company Beyond Meat (a product carried at the Co-op).

From the filmmakers: "If we don't change the way we eat and farm, we're looking at the potential devastation of our planet. Find out what we might be eating in 20 years--and the unlikely places our food may come from."

Palm Oil Scorecard

The Union for Concerned Scientists has released "Palm Oil Scorecard 2015: Fries, Face Wash, Forests." Palm oil is a widely used product that sometimes contributes to tropical deforestation and destruction of peatlands.

The scorecard rates common fast food companies, store brands, packaged foods, and personal care items, and includes last year's rating for comparison.

My Non-GMO Box

Bellingham is most certainly the hub of non-GMO activity, with the Non-GMO Project headquartered in downtown Bellingham and yours truly raising awareness about non-GMO issues and encouraging you all to make your voices heard about labeling issues. But, have you heard about the new kid in town?

My Non-GMO Box was created for people who want to try an assortment of Non-GMO Project verified product samples, and learn more about the products and brands in the box. Simply place your order and look forward to the arrival of your box of goodies. My Non-GMO Box is a great way to try new products, or introduce non-GMO products to your friends and family (who might not be lucky enough to live in a community with so many non-GMO shopping options).

As a special deal for Co-op members, order My Non-GMO Box for only $9.99 (reg. $14.99). Just enter discount code "BhamCoop" during check out.

What's for Breakfast?

We all get stuck in food ruts. For me, the meal that needs a little shake up from time to time is breakfast. Eggs, oatmeal, toast with peanut butter...boring!

101 Cookbooks recently shared some great "Healthy Breakfast Ideas," and that got me thinking about tips to keep breakfast easy, healthy, and interesting.

A few ways I do that is by keeping yogurt and frozen fruit on hand for a quick morning smoothie (or you can go the green smoothie route or add in chia seeds and other nutrient boosters). I also like to make extra grains and vegetables when I'm preparing dinner. A breakfast of quinoa and leftover veggies (with or without an over-easy egg on top) is a super satisfying, filling, and nutritious breakfast.

Whole Wheat Biscuits

Speaking of breakfast ... get some useful tips on making quick, easy biscuits in this 3:20 minute video. Best tip--grate the butter to easily incorporate it and avoid overworking the dough. Brilliant!
