AUTHOR READING
Liz Carlisle, author of "Lentil Underground: Renegade Farmers and the Future of Food in America"
Wednesday, March 4, at 7 pm
Village Books in Fairhaven

Liz Carlisle, a protege of Michael Pollan, shares the story of a little-known group of renegade farmers who defied corporate agribusiness by launching a unique sustainable farm-to-table food movement.

The story of the "Lentil Underground" begins on a 280-acre homestead rooted in America's Great Plains: the Oien family farm. Forty years ago, corporate agribusiness told small farmers like the Oiens to "get big or get out." But 27-year-old David Oien decided to take a stand, becoming the first in his conservative Montana county to plant a radically different crop: organic lentils.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
Domestic Violence and Sexual Assualt Center Volunteer Training

DVSAS has many volunteer and internship opportunities, including one-time projects and ongoing commitments. Whether you are interested in working directly with survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault or helping with special events, you'll find many opportunities to participate in helping address and end violence in our community.

The next volunteer training program begins on March 31. A detailed schedule, information, and application are available on the DVSAS website.

RECIPE
California Barley Bowl
Photo by Heidi Swanson, 101 Cookbooks
Want to expand your repertoire of grain-based recipes? If so, give this California Barley Bowl recipe at 101 Cookbooks a try. It features barley, of course, and other delicious ingredients like queso fresco and avocado (one of my favorite foods on this planet!).

This simple recipe is easily adaptable to include ingredients of your choice. Plus, Heidi Swanson of 101 Cookbooks shares a helpful tip about cooking and freezing barley in order to have a grain at the ready for use in composing a quick and nourishing weeknight meal. Enjoy!
