JANUARY 2015

DOUBLE SAVINGS at the Co-op!
Look for DOUBLE SAVINGS coupon boxes when you shop.

It's that after-the-holidays time of year when folks are feeling the pinch (in their wallets, and maybe in their waistbands too). We get that, and to help out with some penny-pinching we're working to make some of the Co-op's best deals even more visible in our stores.

All you need to do is look for the DOUBLE SAVINGS coupon holders when shopping and grab a coupon to present at checkout. DOUBLE SAVINGS items are items that are already on sale through our regular Co+op Deals program; plus, they have a coupon available on top of the already reduced sales price. The resulting savings can be more than 50% off regular prices!

DOUBLE SAVINGS are available all year and items rotate frequently. If you have any questions about finding great deals at the Co-op, just ask at the Service Desk.

CO-OP PRODUCE
Fair Trade and Winter Produce

During the winter months the balance of local, domestic, and imported produce shifts as crops come in and out of season in various growing regions.

In our produce department that means you'll see lots of domestic organic citrus along with a selection of other domestic products. But, Co-op produce managers are excited about new avenues to access more fair trade, organic produce from Mexico and elsewhere.

We regularly carry GR0W bananas, and Wholesum Harvest is starting to occasionally supply fair trade tomatoes.

A relatively new product, now found regularly in the Co-op produce department, is avocados from Equal Exchange

Frequent Co-op shoppers may already be familiar with Equal Exchange products in our coffee, tea, and chocolate aisles.

Recently, Equal Exchange developed a partnership with PRAGOR, a progressive group of small-scale avocado farmers in Michoacán, Mexico, which is considered the avocado capital of the world. Read more about PRAGOR, and the partnership, on the Equal Exchange website and see how your shopping dollars support small, local farmers in Mexico!

RECIPE
The Best Broccoli of Your Life

Your friendly e-newsletter eidtor has been reading Adam Roberts' blog, "The Amateur Gourmet," for years--following his career and life journey from NYC to LA. Well-written, witty, full of tempting recipes, and an honest sharing of kitchen blunders and wonders.

So without any reservation, here's a recipe for a vegetable that many of us see a lot of during the winter months--broccoli. Adam said it is the most popular post in the 10-year history of his blog, so that's really saying something!

You can also read a fun synopsis about Adam's adventures from the past 10 years, and note that his partner is Craig Johnson, the Bellingham native who directed The Skeleton Twins and hosted an opening night event at the Pickford Film Center when the film opened in October. I guess I blew my opportunity to meet Adam in person, assuming he was even at the event with Craig. I love how random Bellingham connections seem to pop up in the most unexpected places!

RECIPE
Tom's Kitchen: Gratin of Hearty Greens

Tom Philpott originally published this recipe as a suggested addition to a Thanksgiving meal. But we think it looks absolutely delicious and would be a welcome addition to any meal, particularly during these long winter evenings when some healthy comfort food might really hit the spot.

Find the recipe, online at Mother Jones.
