The Co-op Is Your Holiday Hub
We have trees, wreaths, lots of cool stuff, and (of course) great food!

Escape the hub-bub at the big-box stores, and stop by the Co-op for a friendly shopping experience. In the days prior to Christmas we'll have lots of samples, hot cider (at Cordata), and live local musicians playing at both stores.

Mid-month, check our website for a link to our Holiday Meal Planner that includes a guide to how much food to prepare per person, and prices for the delicious scratch-made and organic goodies available from our deli, bakery, produce, cheese, and other departments.

Shop the Co-op for:
  • locally grown live trees
  • a selection of festive wreaths (local and regional)
  • top-quality organic and local produce
  • all the ingredients you need for cooking and baking your homemade specialties
  • fully-stocked bakery and deli cases with everyone's favorite sides dishes and desserts
  • a great selection of free-range, organic, and heritage-breed turkeys
  • unique mercantile items for gift-giving
  • wine, beer, and spirits to suit every preference and budget
  • delicious daily hot breakfast, lunch, and dinner specials, so you can relax in our deli for a quick, healthy meal.
  • gift cards--the gift that's appreciated by everyone
Happy Holidays and Best Wishes in the New Year,
from everyone at the Community Food Co-op!

COOKING TIPS VIDEO
Create the Perfect Fluffy Topping or Filling for Your Holiday Dessert

Whipping and folding are two processes often required for dessert recipes. Chef Chris Ryding demonstrates whipping by making a simple chantilly crème, a French classic that can be added to many cakes and pastries. He then demonstrates the process of folding.

GMO UPDATE
GMO Measure In Oregon Is Heading to a Recount

Measure 92, which would require labeling of genetically engineered foods, is still too close to call and headed for a mandatory statewide recount.

Keep up with the latest vote count at The Oregonian's 2014 Oregon election results webpage. The page is updated regularly.
GMO UPDATE
The GMO Labeling Fight Now Belongs to a 15-Year-Old Canadian Girl

"Rachel Parent is the unlikely activist who has fought the good GMO fight for more than three years now (the math is obvious and inspiring). Her resolute goal: mandatory labeling of all genetically modified organisms in Canada.

"As it turns out, 90 percent of Canadians are in favor of GMO labels. But the united public front has not translated to government action."

RECIPE
It's Soup Season: Warm Up with this Pho-Inspired Vegan Noodle Bowl

We are inspired by this pho-inspired recipe on Sarah Britton's beautiful blog, My New Roots, and think it would be the perfect accompaniment to a rainy Pacific Northwest day.

With a little creativity, the soup can adjusted for any taste preference or dietary requirements. Gluten free, vegan, vegetarian, or satisfy omnivores with the addition of thinly sliced meat or a chicken or meat broth. Finish the dish by adding your favorite vegetables, seasonings, and fresh herbs.

RECIPE
It's Also Baking Season: Sugar Cookie Cut-Outs and Icing

snowflake-cookies.jpg

Sugar cookies are a holiday classic, and are so much fun to make and share. Use this simple recipe from Co+op Stronger Together to make playful, delicious cookies. Gather your family and friends, pull out the cookie cutters, and get creative!

Festive cookies are always appreciated as a gift, so consider making plenty of extras to give to others!

BOOK SUGGESTION
Behind the Kitchen Door

"Sustainability is about contributing to a society that everybody benefits from, not just going organic because you don't want to die from cancer or have a difficult pregnancy. What is a sustainable restaurant? It's one in which as the restaurant grows, the people grow with it." from Behind the Kitchen Door.

How do restaurant workers live on some of the lowest wages in America? And how do poor working conditions discriminatory labor practices, exploitation, and unsanitary kitchens affect the meals that arrive at our restaurant tables? Saru Jayaraman, who launched the national restaurant workers' organization Restaurant Opportunities Centers United, sets out to answer these questions.

RECIPE
Can't Resist Sharing One More Recipe: Rugelach

How to Make the Best Rugelach Cookies, from the kitchn (a truly fabulous blog with recipes, advice, and loads of other information), offers instructions, photos, and an old-school rugelach recipe. Rich and slightly sweet, these little crescent-shaped gems are a traditional treat enjoyed by many Jewish families, particularly during holidays. Choose from an array of fillings or create one of your own!

Just like sugar cookies, rugelach is very fun to make, so gather the kids and get rolling!
