Co-ops Empower People and Create Stronger Communities

Looking for a good read? We highly recommend the recently published story in Yes! magazine, "How America's Largest Worker Owned Co-Op Lifts People Out of Poverty," reported by Laura Flanders

Story excerpt:

"Cooperatives are businesses owned and controlled by their members on the basis of one member, one vote. Given enough time, worker-owned cooperatives tend to increase wages and improve working conditions, and advocates say a local co-op generally stays where it's founded and acts as a leadership-building force.

'There is no greater medicine for apathy and feelings of living on the edges of society than to see your own work and your voice make a difference,' says a report on co-ops by the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies in New York."

The world needs more co-ops, and so does Whatcom County! The Community Food Co-op's Member Affairs Committee is exited to offer a 3-part class series to help make prospective cooperatives a reality.

Learn from local experts with many years experience establishing and working in cooperatives. Cost: $5 per session.
Information and registration in the online Co-op class calendar or at the service desk in our stores.
For the Love of Cows

One of our favorite websites, modernfarmer.com, is hosting cow week with an abundance of stories and photos featuring cows, cows, and more cows! In a past issue of this e-newsletter we shared their dog week spread, so it is only fair that we give the cows their fair turn.

Enjoy!
