Cheese of the Month-Meadowkaas Spring Milk
Dutch (limited quantity release)
Tastings--Thursday, June 26
11 am to 2 pm Downtown, 3-6 pm Cordata
In Holland, nothing expresses the coming of spring more than fields filled of green grasses and brightly colored tulips. To celebrate this vibrant time of year, the cheese makers of Uniekaas create Meadowkaas, a young Dutch Gouda - which uses only the milk from the cow's first grazing on grasses rich in nutrients and flavor resulting in copious quantities of fresh milk with a high cream content - more than 50%. Rich and creamy with just a hint of salt and sweetness, it is the perfect cheese to enjoy with fresh fruits. This special cheese is expected to arrive in the Co-op's specialty cheese department June 6. Sale price $11.99/pound.

Are U.S. Kids Eating Dessert for Breakfast?
In our June print newsletter (available in our stores or online), Lisa Samuel's Ask the Nutritionist column is all about sugar. If you take away only one fact from Lisa's story, let it be this -- 4 grams of sugar = 1 teaspoon. This is a handy visual reference when reading the nutrition facts on packing, and puts the amount of sugar in prepared foods in perspective. Yep, that 12-ounce can of soda that you might grab off the shelf with 39 grams of sugar has almost 10 teaspoons of sugar in it. Gah!
Environmental Working Group's (EWG) recently published report, "Children's Cereals: Sugar by the Pound," reveals that many children's cereals don't fare much better than that sugary can of soda. There are 12 cereals on the list that are more than 50% sugar by weight, most ranging from 14 to 17 grams of sugar per serving, but one store brand cereal has a whopping 50 grams per serving.
To make sure your family isn't eating dessert for breakfast, or for a snack, read nutrition labels. The folks at EWG recommend looking for cereals with 4 grams of sugar or less per serving.

Drink Local
As a perfect accompaniment to the Co-op's excellent selection of local spirits ( see story on page 6), check out this handy chart from the folks at Modern Farmer for suggestions to incorporate local seasonal fresh fruit in your cocktails all year long. Yum!
"From pickled ramps to fresh-pressed apple cider, this should satisfy your craving for a seasonal cocktail. Enjoy!" -Modern Farmer |
