We really couldn't ask for better weather for the May Art Walk! As part of the annual Downtown Children's Art Walk, the Co-op's Downtown store is displaying artwork from Wade King Elementary School students. After you swing by the Co-op to see the work of young artists in our community, stroll around Downtown Bellingham to take in the entire show.
Closing Early Sunday, May 4

Both of our stores will close at 8 pm on Sunday, May 4, for our annual Co-op all-staff meeting.

Sorry for any inconvenience.
Opening Day for The Duckling!

The Duckling--Mallard Ice Cream's traveling ice cream stand--is returning to the Cordata store parking lot. The Duckling will be open only on Mondays from 11 am to 6 pm for the month of May. What better way to start your week, than with some local, handmade ice cream!
As a special bonus, Co-op member-owners can show their Co-op cards at the truck for $1 off one item on Mondays in May (limited to one item per member card, cannot be combined with other coupons or discounts).

You scream, I scream, we all scream for ice cream!
Time to Plant Your Garden? We've Got Starts!

The weather is wonderful. Your garden beckons to you. You are aching to get your hands in the dirt. So, what are you waiting for? Perhaps you are waiting for local flowers, vegetable, and herb starts from the Co-op Garden Center!

If that is the case, then you are in luck. Both of our stores have veggie starts from longtime Bellingham favorite Joe's Garden, certified organic starts from Sunseed Farm, and flowers and herb starts from Cascade Cuts. Tomatoes, peppers, beans, squash, basil, cucumbers, and pretty much everything else you'll want for your garden. Over the next few weeks more starts will continue to arrive. See you soon in the Co-op Garden Center.

Do you ever wish you could ask someone, "What is this plant growing in my yard?" or get some casual advice from fellow local gardeners about how to handle pesky weeds or how to battle slugs? Then perhaps you'd be interested in joining the Whatcom County Gardeners open Facebook group. Get garden advice and tips, and share stories, classes and events. Maybe you'll even stumble on someone giving away some extra raspberry canes (yum). Currently, horsetail and morning glory seem to be hot topics. Oh, the agony!

Bike to Work and School Day
Friday, May 16, early morning through 10 am

Celebration Station at the Cordata Store

Let's hope this gorgeous weather holds for Bike to Work and School Day. But no matter the weather, don your helmet, hop on your bike, and join your fellow cyclists for your daily commute. Stop in at a Celebration Station along your bike route to enter a drawing to win cool stuff, grab a snack or refreshment, and pick up some freebies.

The Celebration Station at the Cordata store will be giving away blinking safety lights to all cyclists (while supplies last) to increase visibility on the road. We do so to honor our co-worker Tim Johnson who is still recovering at home after being hit by a truck when cycling home from work in March.

See a map of Celebration Stations and learn more about associated activities at the Bike to Work and School Day website.
Ask Umbra: Is It Safer to Ride a Bike or Drive a Car?

blue-bike.jpg

Q. I like to commute on my bike, but lately I've been spooked by reports of cyclists getting clobbered by cars. Is it safer to ride a bike or drive in a car? The math gets complicated very quickly.

A. Even the most dedicated cyclists wake in a cold sweat every now and then, their nightmares populated by unexpected car doors and right-turning semis. For all of its many, many benefits, bike commuting can make you feel quite vulnerable out there in traffic. Add to that the emotional gut-punch of a tragic cycling accident, and I don't blame you for getting a little spooked. But should you let that fear keep you off the bike? I think not.

Read Umbra's entire response for some reassuring facts about bike safety. Also includes many useful resource links about safe cycling.
