Vote in the Co-op Board Election

Check your mailbox for the 2014 Board of Directors election packet. There are three qualified candidates, and two open seats to be filled. If you didn't receive an election packet in the mail, information is available at the service desk in either store.

When you vote, you choose who governs our co-op. That's the Co-op difference--we're not just a local natural foods grocery store--we are a member-owned cooperative, guided by the decisions of our membership in a democratic process.

Member-owners can learn about the candidates and vote online at www.voting.coop, or vote with a paper ballot available at the service desk in either store. One vote per member-owner number. Voting closes at 10 pm Monday, March 31.

Fresh Salad From a Vending Machine?

When you need a quick lunch, or a snack to see you through that mid-afternoon slump, and your only option is a vending machine, what are you likely to choose? Forget the usual dreary selection of chips, stale nuts, and candy bars. Now you can buy a delicious fresh salad! Check out the newest innovation in vending machines, or as this company prefers to call it veggie machines--Farmer's Fridge! The only catch is that you need to live or work in the Chicago Loop. Attention entreprenuers--how popular would this idea be in the Pacific Northwest?!

What Questions do you Want to Ask Umbra?

We love to read the Ask Umbra column at the wonderful Grist website to find answers to our green-lifestyle questions. Advice on everything from how to best dispose of dog poop to the most environmentally friendly wood flooring options (a question submitted by a reader in Bellingham!).

Here's a recent Ask Umbra question of interest--
Q. I follow a largely vegan diet, but I often make exceptions for animal foods that have a lighter environmental impact, such as using local honey instead of sugar. I am wondering about butter and its alternatives. Coconut oil is a great butter replacement, but it must travel far. I have access to generic organic butter, but no local butter. What do you recommend?

Check the site to read Umbra's recommendations for butter alternatives, and to submit your own question.
UK Grocers Share their Love of Ugly Veggies

Supermarkets in the UK are helping farmers market their "wonky" veggies. Poor farming conditions, due to unpredictable weather patterns, have reduced the fruit and vegetable yields in the UK and caused grocers to embrace less-than-perfect produce. Why not? It still tastes as wonderful as the perfect, blemish-free produce we've all come to expect on store shelves. Share the love and take home a piece of wonky produce today!

Read more (including the charmingly British descriptions of ugly produce) in The Guardian.
