14th Annual Bellingham Human Rights Film Festival
Get ready for some great movies and great discussions--and it's all free!
This year's Bellingham Human Rights Film Festival kicks off on February 20 with two showings of "Rooted Lands" at the Pickford Film Center--Rural New Mexico communities stand up to the powerful natural gas fracking industry; along with an opening night auction (6:30-9 pm) and a reception between shows. Plus, on February 20 the director will be present for two screenings of "We Can't Eat Gold" (noon and 6 pm) at the Northwest Indian College--Alaska Natives resist as their way of life Is threatened by the Pebble Mine.
The festival continues through March 1 at venues around Bellingham, Lynden, and Deming. Themes for this year's festival are environmental justice, issues of gender equity and cultural rights, peaceful resolution of conflict, and sensible alternatives to corporatism. All screenings are free. |
A Guide to Root Vegetables

Vicki Robin's New Book--
"Blessing the Hands That Feed Us"
Vicki Robin gave an inspiring talk about her new book, " Blessing the Hands that Feed Us," at Village Books on January 28. The book is about her experience eating a 10-mile diet and the personal insights she gathered from that experience, some recipes from local chefs using 10-mile ingredients, and how her community on Whidbey Island is working to envision a more sustainable local food system and encouraging others to do the same. The presentation was recorded and will be broadcast on KMRE radio. Check their schedule for the broadcast date and time to listen to Vicki's presentation, and take pride that our community is already manifesting many of the ideas she discussed.
The book is available for purchase at our local independent bookseller, Village Books. |
Wonderbag! Climate-friendly Cooking
What's new in low-tech cooking? Wonderbag! It's a slow cooker that doesn't need any power. Bring your favorite slow cooker recipe to a boil on the stovetop, cover the pot, put in the Wonderbag, and voila! A beef stew can be ready in as little as four hours, and foods are kept in the safe temperature zone for up to 12 hours. We think this is an awesome and affordable alternative to investing in a slow cooker. Plus, you don't need to worry about leaving a countertop appliance plugged in for several hours when you are away from home.
Read more about the Wonderbag and watch a 2-minute video at HUFFPOST TASTE. |
