Dining with the Directors Forum: Renewing the Downtown Co-op Experience

Thursday, January 30, 6-8 pm

YWCA Ballroom, 1026 N. Forest St.

Free Event-Registration Required

The Co-op Board of Directors is looking forward to meeting with member-owners for the first formal gathering to discuss the plans for expansion and improvements at the Downtown store. We'll hear from Co-op General Manager Jim Ashby and Architect Neil McCarthy about the plans to expand the deli, ease the parking pressure downtown, and improve the shopping experience in general.

Register at the service desk at either store. This event fills quickly. In the interest of hearing from as many member-owners as possible, we will give priority to those who did not attend the last forum. For more information, contact Jean at 360-734-8158, ext. 217, or email jeanr@communityfood.coop.

Cordata Art Show

Your last chance to see Yvette Neumann's gorgeous art show in the Cordata cafe will end mid-January. It is so beautiful--well worth the time to pause and enjoy. Up next is the art of Shelia Sondik. We feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to host so many talented local artists in our store.

I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way - things I had no words for. -Georgia O'Keeffe

Important January Deadlines

January 19--Deadline to submit a candidate packet to run in the March Co-op Board of Directors election. Packets are available at the service desk at either store.

For further information about either of these opportunities, contact Jean Rogers, Board and Farm Fund Administrator, at jeanr@communityfood.coop or 360-734-8158, ext. 217.

Donate the Difference

at the Register

For 14 years the Co-op has raised funds for local organizations through our Community Shopping Day (CSD) program by donating a percentage of total sales on the third Saturday of every month. This year we will have an additional way you can support CSD recipients. Any day you shop, you can ask your cashier to Donate the Difference by rounding up your purchase amount at the register. One hundred percent of all money collected will be donated to the CSD organization of the month. When we all round up and Donate the Difference, our spare change adds up to big cash.

A profile of the Community Shopping Day recipient of the month is featured in our print publications--the Co-op Community News newsletter and the In Season magazine. Pick up a copy in the store, or read them online.

Rolling Stone Takes On Abusive Meat Farming Practices

Your friendly e-newsletter editor has been debating the pros and cons of sharing "In The Belly of the Beast" by Paul Solotaroff. Some people don't like to think about where their meat comes from, it can be an uncomfortable subject. But the reality is, if you eat meat you have a choice about what kind of farming practices your purchases support. And, I don't think anyone wants to support the sort of abuse reported in this story. Read on, and be an informed consumer. I hope you'll agree, that spending a few more dollars for your meat in order to support ethical farmers is one of the easiest decisions you can make.

Pass the Hat--Local Philanthropy Everyone Can Afford

If you have an extra $2/month, you can help relieve some of the financial burdens of victims of tragedy, crime, or disaster in our community. Pass the Hat, founded by Galen Emanuele (who many of you may know from The Upfront Theatre), doesn't rely on fundraisers, auctions, or large donations. Here's how it works--you sign up to give $2 a month, every month, that's it. Join Pass the Hat, and invite your friends to join, too!
My Potato Project -- A Simple Science Experiment

This girl's science project illustrates just one difference between conventional and organic produce. Maybe you'll be inspired to try your own produce experiment at home. Hope she got an A+.
