The Co-op's New Mural
We hope you have stopped to enjoy the new mural in the play area at the Downtown store. Karl Meyer, Co-op Outreach Coordinator, who was behind the commission of the mural, shot this short 1-minute video (on his cell phone, so it's fun but not the highest quality) of artist Daniel Tucker.

Book Suggestion: Bi-Rite Market's Eat Good Food -- A grocer's guide to shopping, cooking, and creating community through food
by Sam Mogannam and Dabney Gough
We've been passing this book around the office for inspiration. After all, we absolutely agree with Bi-Rite's informal criteria for their market: "Would we eat this ourselves? Would we feed it to our children? How was this raised, grown, or made? What was the impact on the environment? How are the workers treated? Can we feel good about that?"
Here's a snippet from the review on Village Book's website: "Get the most out of your grocery shopping with this innovative shopper's guide and cookbook rolled into one. In Eat Good Food, former chef Sam Mogannam, owner of San Francisco's popular Bi-Rite Market, guides you through the grocery store one department at a time, and explains how to identify incredible ingredients, decipher labels and terms, build a great pantry, and reconnect with the people and places that feed us." |
Reflecting on the GMO Vote
Over the past several months, Grist.org has published Nathanael Johnson's well-written and well-researched series of stories about GMOs. Johnson did a very thorough job covering the issues, and he recently wrote a story about the outcome of the GMO labeling initiative vote in our state. If you are interested in reading more about GMOs, give Johnson's stories a look.

Concerned about GMOs? GMO Action Alert!
While we lost the battle to label GMO food in Washington, the war rages on. The USDA is close to approving sales of the first GE apple. The Arctic Apple suppresses the gene that causes apples to brown after slicing. Although these apples are primarily targeted to the fresh-sliced apple market they could also find their way into non-GE juice, baby foods, or apple sauce--all products predominantly eaten by children and babies who are at increased risk for any adverse health effects.
Join apple growers who have already voiced their disapproval due to the negative impact the apples could have on organic apple growers and non-GE apples, and to the image of the apple industry as a whole.
