October is also Non-GMO Month This year we are focusing on getting out the vote for I-522, the Washington State initiative to label GMOs in our food. We are hosting several fun and educational events on the issue.
Wednesday, October 9--GMO OMG 6 pm at the Pickford Film Center Documentary film followed by panel discussion Director and concerned father Jeremy Seifert goes in search of answers. How do GMOs affect our children, the health of our planet, and our freedom of choice? And perhaps the ultimate question: is it even possible to reject the food system currently in place, or have we lost something we can't gain back?
Thursday, October 17--GMOs: Your Right to Know 7 pm at Settlemyer Family Hall, Bellingham Technical College3028 Lindbergh Ave. in BellinghamFree eventJoin Megan Westgate, executive director of the Non-GMO Project, and Delana Jones, campaign director for Yes on I-522, to hear the inside scoop on GMOs and the I-522 campaign. In addition, we have two free Healthy Connections classes that focus on the issue. Monday, October 7--GMOs: A Scientific Perspective with Certified Nutritionist Tom Malterre Monday, October 21--Non-GMO Corn Preservation with Krista Rome of the Backyard Beans and Grain Project and Courtney Pineau of the Non-GMO Project. Vote! If you haven't yet registered to vote, or need to update your voting information, you have until October 7 to do so online at www.sos.wa.gov/elections. Ballots will be mailed October 18. YES on 522 needs every vote! On to victory! |
Oh, and October is also Fair Trade Month!
Starting next month, when you buy Equal Exchange's fair trade, organic bulk coffee, you'll see a colorful new symbol on the bulk coffee bins. The symbol represents the first farmer-owned and run Fair Trade certification system. It guarantees the coffee comes from small farmers, not large plantations.
Ten years in the making, the SPP (Small Producer Symbol; SPP is its Spanish acronym) certification system represents small farmers' persistent attempts to ensure a more just trade system for fellow farmers everywhere. The SPP logo initially will appear on Equal Exchange's bulk coffee, and will become more prominent throughout stores. It soon will be on packaged coffee, and may eventually be on Equal Exchange's other products including tea and chocolate.
Read more about it at the Small Farmers. Big Change. blog.

Eat Drink Vote: An Illustrated Guide to Food Politics
A new book by Marion Nestle
In Eat, Drink, Vote, Marion Nestle teams up with The Cartoonist Group syndicate to present more than 250 of her favorite cartoons on issues ranging from dietary advice to genetic engineering to childhood obesity. Using the cartoons as illustration and commentary, she engagingly summarizes some of today's most pressing issues in food politics. While encouraging readers to vote with their forks for healthier diets, this book insists that it's also necessary to vote with votes to make it easier for everyone to make healthier dietary choices.

Another Crop Contaminated by GMOs
Remember the Oregon farmer's wheat crop that was contaminated by GMOs and temporarily halted all U.S. wheat exports? Well, it happened again. A Washington farmer's alfalfa crop was tainted with Monsanto's Roundup Ready variety and rejected for export. What's worse is that after the farmer complained to the USDA, they decided not to take any action, and that the problem should be addressed by the marketplace and not the government. |
Ding, dong. Trick or Treat!
What can be difficult about choosing sweets for the trick-or-treaters who will descend on your doorstep at month's end? Well, for some people there are issues to consider. Choosing ethical chocolate produced without child labor, looking for treats free of food coloring or artificial sweeteners, or sourcing gluten-free, vegan, or vegetarian treats.
If you are searching for a specific treat for Halloween, the Co-op can help. Ethical chocolate? We have many brands of Fair Trade Certified chocolate on our shelves. Ingredient specifications? All of the treats on our shelves are free of food coloring and high fructose corn syrup. If you are looking for other properties, such as gluten-free, ask grocery or service desk staff for recommendations. The Co-op has a sweet for every ghost or goblin in your neighborhood. |
