Hosted by Biosafety Alliance
August 2 and 3
Seattle, multiple locations
This annual conference is the largest gathering in the U.S. focused on educating and creating awareness about the implications of GMO seeds. As an international platform to share, learn and launch campaigns in support of a GMO-free food supply, speakers from various backgrounds will examine GMO seeds' relation to health, social justice, environment, and corporate consolidation within local to global contexts.
For more info see the Biosafety Alliance website. |
"MyVote" Voter RegistrationYou can't vote YES on 522 to support labeling GMO foods in Washington State if you're not registered to vote or your address is not current. Use this handy link to the MyVote website to register or to verify the accuracy of your voter's registration. We need every vote to defeat the big-bucks opposition campaign. Common Threads Farm Camps
There's still time for kids to join in the summer fun at Common Threads Farm whose mission is to connect young people with healthy food through hands-on, seed-to-table educational experiences.
Camp Pasta
Why not start the conversation about healthy food by delving into the story of a well-loved standby. What does is take to make pasta? How many different kinds are there? Do you need special tools to make pasta from scratch? Join us as we go from soil to grain to flour to dough; from milk to cheese; and from from seeds to veggies to garden-fresh sauce. The week culminates with delicious pasta made with our friends from The Table restaurant and a chance for kids to run their own farm stand. Includes field trips. Recommended for kids ages 7-12.
August 5-8; 9 am-3 pm
$185/person (Need-based fee reductions available.)
Farm Camp
Plant and tend vegetables, prepare delicious food straight out of the garden, visit with animals like ducks and sheep, and learn through hands-on exploration and experimentation. Count on dirty hands, silly stories, and yummy fresh-from-the-garden snacks! Recommended for kids ages 4-7.
August 12-15 or August 19-22; 9 am to noon
$125/person (Need-based fee reductions available.)

Chipotle is now the first restaurant to label GMOs in its food
By Holly Richmond
GMOs are kind of a sticky wicket. In a super-oversimplified nutshell, some people say they're bad (unless you're a huge corporation getting rich off them). Others are quick to counter, "OMG how else are we going to feed the world?! Shut the eff up already and grow the robot-food!" I'll make no pretense of neutrality. Robot food for everyone! (KIDDING. Shudder.)
So those of us in the skeptical-of-GMOs camp may be happy to hear Chipotle is voluntarily identifying GMOs in its menu items (although only on its website, not in stores) - making it the first restaurant chain in the country to do so.
