Get Your Patronage Dividend-
Update Your Snail Mail Address

More than 200 Co-op member-owner mailing addresses in our database are no longer deliverable by the U.S. Postal Service. If you have moved or if you joined the Co-op prior to the Sudden Valley address reclassification, then you are missing out on receiving our magazine, member-owner coupons, and election notices. We keep mailings to a minimum, and believe that what little we do mail is of importance to our member-owners. Stop by the service desk at either store to update your mailing address. Particularly important if you want to receive your patronage dividend in August!

Learn more about the patronage dividend in our July/August newsletter, available in our stores and online

Know What You Eat

The very user-friendly SELFNutritionData website is an excellent resource to learn pretty much anything that you might want to know about your food. The site offers nutrition facts, calories in food, labels, and nutritional information and analysis, and blogs on heart health, diet and weight loss, diabetes, and nutrition data and much more than I have space to mention here.

For instance, enter "Kiwi" and you learn that 1 cup of fresh, raw kiwi is 87% carbs, 7% fat and 6% protein, has a glycemic index of 8 out of 250 and an inflammation factor or 34, which is mildly inflammatory, and provides 273% of your RDA of Vitamin C and 5g of dietary fiber. And that is just the beginning of the information to be found. You can also compare foods--like kiwi and strawberries. Or, you can find nutrition information on products that contain kiwi, like Jamba Juice or V8 Juice. Check out this very useful tool.
Free Summer Food Program for Kids

Summer's here and school is out! A fact that brings a smile to the faces of school children, but can also bring a burden to some families that rely on school nutrition programs to supplement their children's daily nutrition. Any child ages 18 and younger can eat a free breakfast or lunch at select Bellingham Public Schools, and a few other locations, during the summer through the Simplified Summer Food Program for Children. Find information on sites, dates, and time at the Bellingham Public Schools website.

Pass the word to kids and parents needing food assistance this summer. No hungry kids!!
Buzzkill: Huge bee die-off in Oregon parking lot blamed on insecticide spraying

By John Upton

National Pollinator Week began grimly Sunday when tens of thousands of dead bumblebees, honeybees, ladybugs, and other insects were discovered blanketing a shopping plaza's parking lot just off Interstate 5 in Wilsonville, Ore.

Bumblebees were the species hardest hit, with an estimated 25,000 dead and 150 colonies lost outside a Target store. "They were literally falling out of the trees," said Rich Hatfield, a conservation biologist with the nonprofit Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation. "To our knowledge this is one of the largest documented bumblebee deaths in the Western U.S. It was heartbreaking to watch."
