Introducing Co+op Essentials

As part of our 10-year strategic plan, we are addressing our commitment to make high quality, nutritious, and affordable food more accessible to all. This commitment led to the creation of the Co+op Essentials program. Co+op Essentials includes a line of 50 to 60 deeply discounted, everyday, basic products throughout the store. Discounts are available to all Co-op shoppers, but member-owners receive the lowest marked price (which reflects an additional 5 percent off of the already discounted non-member price). This is not just a 2-week promotional sale, the Co-op will maintain low pricing on these basic items.

Look for Co+op Essentials signs throughout our stores to identify products, or see what's included on our website.

Momentum is Building for the YES on 522 Campaign to Label GMO Foods in our State

The YES on 522 coalition, including a representative from the Co-op, recently met to hear about recent campaign milestones, review early research findings, discuss strategy, and learn more about how to engage in the campaign. The November election will be here soon enough, and we need everyone to be informed about GMOs, and to discuss the issue with your network of acquaintances. You are critical to building the momentum that will carry this campaign to win in November!

A great resource to learn more, so you can help to educate others, is the Non-GMO Project website or Facebook. Start with their helpful GMO Facts page.

Avoiding Superbugs in Meat

Responsible doctors don't give people antibiotics they don't need, but livestock producers feed healthy animals antibiotics to make them grow faster--no prescription needed. In 2011, pharmaceutical makers sold nearly 30 million pounds of antibiotics for use on domestic food-producing animals, amounting to nearly 80 percent of the total American antibiotics market, according to the Pew Campaign on Human Health and Industrial Farming. Pew calculates that the market for antibiotics for treatment of people has been flat for some years, hovering at around 7.7 million pounds annually.

Check out Environmental Working Group's excellent resource, the "Meat Eater's Guide to Climate Change and Health," to learn more about antibiotics in meat and so much more. And take a look at the handy EWG tipsheet with "Tips to Help you Avoid Superbugs in Meat."
