We Signed the Pledge
Community Food Co-op is among the many co-ops and grocers who signed the Pledge for GE-Free Seafood. We have been encouraging Co-op shoppers and member-owners to comment on the ongoing process to approve the sale of GE salmon, but despite resounding opposition it appears the sale of GE salmon will be approved by the FDA. We want our shoppers to rest assured that the Co-op will not sell GE seafood in our stores.

Is The World Ready For A Hipster Farming Magazine?
 Brace, we've got a farm-to-newsstand situation here
By George Embiricos

Modern Farmer is a print quarterly and website devoted to the people, policy, animals, plants, and technology that revolve around the world of farming. Scheduled to debut their first issue in Spring 2013, the newly launched media company has created a Tumblr page to announce that the seeds are in the soil. So far, there are hints that the debut issue will tackle a range of topics including 19th Century cattle breeding to "what kind of animal poop can you use for fertilizer." There's also a Twitter at @ModFarm.

Whatcom Farm to School Celebration

Friday, April 26, 7-9 pm

Squalicum High School

Free

Don't miss the Whatcom Farm-to-School Celebration-an evening of festivities and fun for the whole family. Sample four new school lunch menus featuring locally grown ingredients, and cast your vote for the winner. The first-prize menu will be served in participating schools throughout Whatcom County and at Western Washington University. The evening's entertainment features Jason Quick, the One-Armed Juggler, performing feats with food as he "balances" his diet, and a screening of the winning one-minute videos from the Veggies Go Viral Video Contest. In addition, you can meet some of the farmers who have been growing food for our schools this year.

For more information, visit the whatcomfarmtoschool.org of find Whatcome Farm-to-School on Facebook.

Foodie Holidays?

Hopefully, we all know that April 1 is April Fool's Day, but did you know that among the many (perhaps too many) other obscure holidays in April are several food-related holidays that you can choose to recognize--or not! We're thinking there is a need for more stringent standards when declaring a nationally recognized day, although the internet informs us that these holidays are not supported by any congressional records or presidential proclamations, which is somewhat reassuring. Personally, I think I'll celebrate National Eggs Benedict Day--I really don't need much of an excuse to indulge.

In April:

2-National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day

7-Caramel Popcorn Day

14-National Pecan Day

16-National Eggs Benedict Day

17-National Cheeseball Day

19-National Garlic Day

22-National Jelly Bean Day

24-Pig in a Blanket Day

26-National Pretzel Day

27-National Prime Rib Day

29-National Shrimp Scampi Day

Find more obscure and silly days of recognition at the Holiday Insights website.
