Vote in the Board Election--

Your Vote Counts

The Co-op's 2013 Board election is in full swing, and owners can cast their votes until 10 pm March 31. Unlike conventional stores, co-ops are guided by the Seven Cooperative Principles, the second of which is Democratic Control. Owners enjoy equal voting rights (one owner, one vote) and participation in decisions affecting them.

Co-op's Farm Fund Allocates Funds
The Co-op's Farm Fund has directed $15,431 to 12 local farms and food and farming projects - the largest grant allocation in the program's 11 year history. Donations by the Co-op, our shoppers, and local organizations allow the Farm Fund to support projects that build the market for local farms, encourage ecological and socially responsible stewardship of farmland, and increase community access to healthy, local food. Congratulations to the 2013 recipients: Uprising Seeds, Sage and Sky Farm, Bow Hill Blueberries, Bellingham Food Bank, Cloud Mountain Farm Center, Ferndale Public Market, WSU-Whatcom County Extension, Backyard Beans and Grains Project, Whatcom Food Network, Local Food Works, York Neighborhood Association and Growing Veterans.

You can donate to the Farm Fund at any Co-op register or at the service desk.
Aisle be damned: How Big Food dominates your supermarket choices
By Andy Bellatti

It's no surprise that gigantic, multinational companies own most of the dominant organic brands out there. Big Food's tentacles stretch far: Just four companies control 80 percent of the beef market, and many competing brands in the snack aisle huddle under the umbrella of the same parent company.

The corporate control and consolidation of the food industry is the central theme of Wenonah Hauter's new book, Foodopoly: The Battle Over the Future of Food and Farming in America. Hauter, the executive director of Food & Water Watch, explores "the battle over the food and farming in America" as independent farmers and companies struggle to stay afloat in the face of corporate mergers and bad food policy.

Fun Interactive Website for Kids, Parents,
Teachers
You may have noticed the fun Kids Corner activity, Chef Solus and the Junk Food Tree, on the back cover of the Winter/Spring 2013 issue of our new magazine, In Season. That activity came from our new favorite nutrition website, Nourish Interactive. The site offers games, recipes, daily tips, advice for parents, a blog, and much more. Activities are available in English or Spanish and organized by age and grade level. We recommend parents, educators, and kids check it out. Fun, health-minded, interactive, and free. What's not to love?

Ten reasons why we don't need GM foods
Between now and the November election, the citizens of Washington state must continue to educate their friends and neighbors about GMOs. Here is a handy list of 10 reasons why we don't need GM foods for you to share and keep the campaign to label GMOs in our state moving forward.

The top three reasons:
1. GM foods won't solve the food crisis
2. GM crops do not increase yield potential
3. GM crops increase pesticide use

See all 10 reasons at the GM Watch website.
Cloud Mountain Farm Center March Workshops
