Pacific Hospital PDA property in the news

Over the past week, you may have seen a couple of news articles about potential ideas for leasing the Pacific Tower property. The parties interested in leasing the building recognize the iconic character of the property and the excellent condition of the building itself. The Pacific Tower will be a great home for a fortunate tenant.

We were sorry that the news articles didn't mention the long-term commitment of Pacific Hospital PDA to improve specialty care access for the uninsured since we began. In just the past 10 years, we have provided more than $10 million to support access to specialty health care for uninsured or underinsured patients and more than $1 million (since 2006) to fund case management to ensure successful referrals of those patients.

New website launched

webUpdated website provides more information

The Pacific Hospital PDA has funded a number of projects that improve access and outcomes for low-income, uninsured people in our community. These projects have added to our community knowledge about the uninsured and the barriers they face. Our updated website provides easier access to information about the projects, outcomes and collaborators.

A few of these projects are highlighted here:

dentalCommunity collaboration for dental access

In 2011, the Pacific Hospital PDA entered into a partnership with the Seattle-King County Dental Society (SKCDS) and the Seattle-King County Dental Foundation (SKCDF) to provide access to dental care for low-income, uninsured patients. As part of this partnership, the Pacific Hospital PDA provides grant funding to Project Access Northwest to case manage patients referred by the safety net to the Swedish Community Specialty Clinic (SCSC) for dental extractions. Over the past three years, Pacific Hospital PDA has provided $247,143 in support for specialty dental access. In 2012, more than 570 dental patients had 2,163 teeth extracted and more than $731,000 in donated care was provided at SCSC. Learn more about this project here.

navigatorsPatient navigators save dollars, improve satisfaction

From July 2009 through June 2011, the Pacific Hospital PDA provided a $277,832 grant to Seattle Children's to pilot the value of patient navigators for Somali- and Spanish-speaking families. The evaluation found that the program provided significant cost savings, improvements in satisfaction for Somali- and Spanish-speaking patients and their families and the providers who care for them, as well as fewer missed appointments and more completed referrals among the families that worked with a navigator. The estimated return on direct investment is about 5.8.In other words, every dollar Seattle Children's spent on patient navigators saved almost six dollars. Learn more about this project here.

caseImproving specialty access through case management

The Pacific Hospital PDA was an original funder for Project Access Northwest in 2006 and has continued funding Project Access Northwest's medical case management ever since, including a $150,000 grant for 2013. From 2006-2013, the Pacific Hospital PDA provided $950,000 in support for Project Access Northwest and nearly 15,000 patients have been served. Learn more about this project here.

uninsuredSpecialty care for low-income, uninsured

Between 2003 and May 2011, the Pacific Hospital PDA provided more than $10 million to Pacific Medical Centers to underwrite specialty care services provided to low-income, uninsured persons referred from safety net clinics. PMC reported seeing 14,817 low-income, uninsured patients and providing almost 29,000 visits to those patients in that time. Learn more about this project here.

barriersReferral barriers in safety net clinics

In 2010, the Pacific Hospital PDA funded a study to address the difficulties in tracking referrals within community health centers. The study led to improvements in several aspects of the referral processes at community health centers, including improvements in the electronic record medical referral module. Pacific Hospital PDA supported this study and the medical record improvements with $44,145. The findings from this study have helped safety net clinics track and monitor patient referrals more effectively and efficiently. Learn more about this project here.
