Dunedin Community Garden

The Dunedin Community Garden is a 501(c) 3 grass roots organization that fosters community through sustainable gardening and friendship.  Their journey began in 2009 when a group of residents and officials from the City of Dunedin organized and leased a little known city park to renovate into a community garden.

Dunedin Community Garden offers raised plots and surface to provide the opportunity for gardeners with mobility impairments to access their beds using their mobility device.  The purpose is to enable people who, without these accessibility features, would otherwise not be able to garden.  Three, of an initial six disability friendly beds, are still awaiting gardeners.

The initial cost to have your own garden plot is:

  • $25 annual membership
  • $25 refundable deposit for the plot
  • $40 for topsoil
  • Micro-irrigation setup is up to the gardener
Gardeners typically mentor each other on gardening tips and tricks, but they also have free monthly education workshops that are open to all members and their friends.  Members also receive an exclusive quarterly newsletter.  You not have to be a Dunedin resident to be a member.

The 10th and Final Kinsey Leonard Golf Tournament

The 10th (and final) Kinsey Leonard Golf Tournament was held on April 27, 2013, in St. John's, Florida.

If you are a frequent reader of our newsletter, you know that Kinsey was hit by a pick-up truck while crossing the street to board her school bus in January of 2004 and suffered a life threatening traumatic brain injury.  Since that time, Kinsey and her family have given back to those individuals and organizations that have supported them by hosting an annual golf tournament and donating the proceeds.

This year's tournament yielded $4,870, which Kinsey and her family donated to the Jan La Belle Scholarship Program at FND.  Their generosity will provide another scholarship to another youth with a disability in 2014!

After receiving the scholarship, Kinsey attended the Photography Program at Daytona State College.  This required her to move away from home and and become an independent young adult.  She is now working almost full-time at Marineland in Guest Services and as a Photographer.  She is taking photographs during in-water programs, which is exactly what she had hoped to do.

Thank you, Kinsey.  We are so proud of you!
