2013 Jan La Belle Scholarship
 Award Winners

The winners of the 2013 Jan La Belle Scholarship have been selected and notified. They will be officially presented at their Senior Awards Ceremonies in May.

Fazida Yathali lives in Wellington, Florida, and wants to pursue a career in the arts. She hopes to attend the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston or the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. Fazida wants to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree so that she can work as an exhibiting artist while teaching at an art school to show children how to express themselves with artwork. She was diagnosed with Specific Learning Disability and Language Impaired in 2001. A teacher writes of Fazida, "Academically Fazida has always been successful simply because she is willing to do as much work as it takes to do so." We are excited to be able to help Fazida achieve her goals by providing her a scholarship in the amount of $10,000.

Brian Adkins lives in Jacksonville, Florida and wants to get a degree in special needs education to become a Braille specialist teacher. He has applied to Florida State University for the Fall 2013 term. Brian was diagnosed with Retinopathy of Prematurity at birth and wants to be as independent as possible. Brian's pastor has known him since he was in pre-school and wrote, "Brian was always determined to succeed." We are honored to help Brian along that path by providing him a scholarship in the amount of $5,000.

The 10th and Final Kinsey Leonard
Golf Tournament

Speaking of scholarship award winners . . . ! Do you remember Kinsey Leonard, the recipient of one of the first Jan La Belle Scholarships?

She and her family are hosting the 10th (and final) Kinsey Leonard Golf Tournament on Saturday, April 27, 2013, at The Champions Club at Julington Creek in St. Johns, Florida.

In January of 2004, Kinsey was hit by a pick-up truck while crossing the street to board her school bus and suffered a life threatening traumatic brain injury. Since that time, her family has given back to those individuals and organizations that have supported Kinsey by hosting an annual golf tournament and donating the proceeds. Last year, Family Network on Disabilities received $1,870 from their generosity.

The proceeds from this year's tournament will be donated to FND as well. At the request of the Leonard's, all of the money raised from last year's and the upcoming tournament will be used for future Jan La Belle Scholarship winners.

Thank you, Leonard Family!
