7:30 PM
The final performance of the 2012-13 Synergy Jazz Concert Series features legendary jazz pianist Dan Haerle. He has toured with numerous jazz artists such as Clark Terry, Kai Winding, Woody Shaw and was the obvious choice in subbing for an ill Stan Kenton.
His teaching career includes stints at The University of Miami, Arizona State, and The University of North Texas where he was instrumental in developing the jazz studies curriculum. He has written numerous text books and is considered one of the innovators in jazz education. Haerle is recently retired from the University of North Texas and continues to teach as an adjunct professor.
Haerle was inducted into the International Association of Jazz Education "Hall of Fame" at the annual conference in Toronto on January 9, 2003. The IAJE Hall of Fame Award honors individuals whose musical contributions and dedication to jazz education over the past 25 years have created new directions and curricular innovations for jazz education worldwide. On January 6, 2012, the Jazz Education Network (JEN) awarded Haerle (along with Jamey Aebersold, David Baker and Jerry Coker) the distinction of "LeJENd of Jazz Education" at its 3rd annual conference in Louisville, Kentucky.
Joining Haerle will be Des Moines' own drummer John Kizilarmut, and bassist David Altemeier.
