Survey reveals the extent to which library systems in the U.S. are "welcoming" to immigrants
Research inreasingly shows that local administratve agencies, staffed by what the author calls "street-level bureaucrats," such as librarians, teachers, police, and social workers, play an important role in the integration of immigrants into the community. Perhaps on a continuum from welcoming to hostile, these local officials have some discretion in how they approach immigrants. Public libraries stand out in this regard, having provided important informaton and services to immigrans throughout their history.
