CDC Chronic Disease Prevention and
Health Promotion Funding
For the past few years, the CDC, National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (Center) has been working to coordinate the categorical, disease-specific programs, such as heart disease and stroke, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, and nutrition, physical activity and obesity.  To help coordinate these programs, the Center
developed a four domain framework.  ASTPHND expects that the four domain framework will continue to shape the future of work funded by CDC's Combined Chronic Disease Prevention Grant Program (CCDPGP).  This change will likely affect the CDC nutrition, physical activity, and obesity state programs.

ASTPHND's Obesity Prevention Nutrition Steering Committee has prepared a summary of the four domain framework using examples relevant to public health nutrition.  Click here to view ASTPHND's document and to review the original CDC Examples of Strategies with Domains and Four Domains from November 2012.

New Healthy Vending Standards from NANA

The National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity  (NANA) recently completed model beverage and food standards for vending machines and a corresponding model policy.  These model vending standards can be used:

  • In an agency policy, executive order, regulation, or other executive branch approach to implement vending standards in states or localities.
  • As a resource on your website.
  • To encourage a hospital, university, or organization to move to healthy vending.
  • As standards for any other location with a vending machine.

Offering healthy food and beverage options on state property demonstrates the state's commitment to addressing obesity.  These steps support other state nutrition and obesity efforts, and they are a no-cost policy option in these times of tight budgets.

NANA is now developing a list of products that meet the vending standards, producing a factsheet about the impact of healthy vending standards on revenue, and compiling healthy vending success stories. To share your success story about vending or food procurement policies, or for more information about healthier food choices on public property, please contact Katie Bishop.
