My septuagenarian friend, Thomas John Carlisle [1913-92], a published poet, wrote this prayer in handsome penmanship:

When age enmeshes me

God grant that I may see

God grant that I may hear

and that my mind be clear

my tongue in good control

and springtime in my soul.
