Salvation Army & Hawaiian Community Assets to Bring Family Homebuyer Workshops to Kroc Center

June 2, 2014

"We learned a lot in class. We learned about our credit report,

paying off our bills, and paying bills on time to get our home.

This was really a miracle. We never expected to be

offered a home so quickly. Mahalo Ke Akua!"

KAPOLEI, HI - Salvation Army of Hawaii and Hawaiian Community Assets (HCA) are partnering to bring free family homebuyer education workshops for parents and children to the Kroc Center starting in June to commemorate homeownership month.

The 8-hour interactive workshops will assist parents and their children, ages 10+, learn the steps to become successful homebuyers and how to sustain homeownership for the family. Group activities will help families establish long-term savings goals, develop monthly spending plans, and compare buying versus renting homes.  Additional age-appropriate activities will teach parents and children about employment/paychecks, banking, credit, and credit reports.

"At The Salvation Army Kroc Center we focus on helping families thrive.  We are pleased to partner with Hawaii Community Assets for the purpose of assisting families in realizing the dream of home ownership," said Kroc Center Family Services Manager, Leslie Moody.

Families who complete the workshop will receive a HUD-certified Homebuyer Education Program Certificate qualifying them for match savings, micro-loans, and mortgage lending programs as well as a free credit report and counseling by HCA staff.  All attendees will be provided locally-developed Kahua Waiwai: Building a Foundation of Wealth(c) homebuyer and youth financial education handbooks.

"HCA is excited about our partnership with the Salvation Army Kroc Center and mahalo them for their embrace of a concept that promotes family financial learning," shared HCA Executive Director, Jeff Gilbreath.  "The ability to bring children and parents together to learn about the home buying process not only helps our families realize the dream of homeownership, but serves an investment in sustaining homeownership for future generations."

The free, one-of-a-kind workshops will take place Sunday, June 29th and Sunday, July 27th from 8:30a-5:30p with lunch breaks.  Workshops are limited to 20 people and require families to complete HCA client intake packets.
