Starfish Updates
Blogs: We participated in a Tummy Time blog hop this month with several other great bloggers! Here are the posts that were part of it.
Cigna Update: Cigna has delayed their transition to American Specialty Health until January 1, 2015. As a result this means that we, Starfish Therapies, will continue to be in-network with Cigna through the end of 2014. Beginning 2015, we will be out of network. Please contact us if you have questions about how this directly affects you. We will continue to keep you updated if the transition is delayed again.

Back to School: Backpack Safety
As summer comes to a close and the first day of school is approaching, we wanted to take a moment to share some tips regarding backpack safety. For additional information and a video discussing these tips, please visit this website. 1. Wearing both Straps: By wearing both straps of the backpack, the weight of the load is better distributed. When wearing only one strap, your child is putting greater risk on one side of his/her body, putting them at risk for developing postural asymmetries or muscle imbalances. 2. Position of the Backpack: Your child's backpack should be positioned in the middle of the child's back, and should not rest lower than the base of their low back. The shoulder straps should be adjusted so that your child can get his/her backpack on and off without difficulty. Additionally, their arms should be free to move without any restrictions. 3. Weight of the Backpack: A child's backpack should weigh no more than 10-15% of their body weight. If a child's backpack weighs more than this, it puts excessive pressure on their neck, shoulders and back. Additionally, to help better distribute the weight, the heavier items should be placed closer to the child's back. If you have questions regarding the fit of your child's backpack, please touch base with his/her physical therapist!

As children head back to school, the amount of time that they are asked to sit during the day increases drastically. Summer provides many opportunities for play, and then suddenly they are thrust back into the daily routine, where the demands of school and homework require them to sit for much longer periods. As a result, it is important to keep child moving during time periods that they are not in school. Here are a few tips on how to incorporate movement into a child's daily routine: - Walk/Bike to School: Walking or biking to school allows a child to start their day off with some exercise, which allows them to better organize and regulate their sensory systems prior to being asked to sit for prolonged periods of time at school. If your child's school is too far away to walk, try parking a few blocks away and walk the remainder of the way to school rather than dropping your child off directly in front.
- Create an Obstacle Course: After you child gets home from school, allow them an opportunity to play prior to beginning their homework. They have just been asked to sit all day at school, and will likely need a movement break prior to being ready to sit and engage in more academic work. Try creating an obstacle course outside with activities such as hopscotch, jump rope, jumping off of surfaces, running, skipping, etc. This allows them to work on their gross motor skills while also providing them with a movement break and a chance to regulate their sensory system.
- After School Activities: Encourage your child to get involved in an after-school activity, whether that is a play-date with peers or a structured sports program. It is recommended that children get an average of one hour of physical activity each day.
