March 2013

News from the WISTEM Center

I am Mehreen Fatima and I am a biology major at MTSU. I am a junior and I'm planning to apply to a master of science program. I am new to the WISTEM Center and I'm going to take over the newsletter soon. Lauren is about to graduate from MTSU in May 2013 and she will attend pharmacy school next fall.  Congratulations Lauren!  I am also new to GRITS and I'm so excited to be working with GRITS Collaborative Project. I was an EYH group leader  in my sophomore year and it was a great experience. I can't wait to see what my future has in store for me as a woman in STEM!

GRITS Mini-Grants Opening April 15th

We are excited to announce that Mini-Grant applications will open again on April 15th and remain open until May 15th. If you don't know about Mini-Grants, these are maximum $1000 grants awarded to girl-serving science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) focused programs to support collaboration, address gaps and overlaps in service, and share promising practices. This year, the National Girls Collaborative Project (NGCP) is focused on growing collaborations. We want to build sustainable, quality collaborative efforts that provide on-going services to girls in STEM. Because of that, we're looking for innovative projects between groups that have not worked together before but are forging new partnerships to bring STEM opportunities to girls in their area.

If you are interested in applying, please email one of the Mini-Grant Chairs to get started
Dr. Rachel Rigsby at [email protected] or Dr. Lisa Eccles at [email protected]

STEM Bullet Points

  • In 2012, the Labor Department reported that women made only 81% as much as men, on average. The pay gap widened from 82% in 2011. See more at The Huffington Post.
  • Another interesting article is found at Science Careers. Price summarizes the symposium, Improving the Pipeline into Science for Minorities, where speakers spoke to the critical importance of mentoring. Price reports that "Achieving ethnic, racial and gender parity in the science pipeline will require measures that help white and minority graduate students, and their mentors, better understand the world in which they live."
  • Diversity in STEM includes professionals with disabilities. Read the article by Jim Hasse, How to Develop a STEM Career When You Have a Disability at gettinghired.comCheck out the resources provided by the American Chemical Society on teaching chemistry to students with disabilities at American Chemical Society.
