Every week we get to try new wines from all over the world. Today I had the opportunity to taste a new petit Chateau from the top rated 2010 vintage that is one of those very special wine finds! This is one that grabbed my attention immediately from the fantastic aromas and rich fruit complexity that can best be described as harmonious at a very affordable price. What makes this wine unique is that it has a large percentage of Malbec (35%) along with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot making up the remainder of the blend. I can tell you that this an absolute Gem and it is drinking beautifully and will also age nicely for a few years too. The winery also did something that many wineries do not do and they bottled it in additional formats (Magnums, Double Magnums, 5 liter and 6 liter bottles) These are worth cellaring too and also would make for some impressive Christmas gifts too! Fantastic aromas leap from the glass offering beautiful dark blackberry and cassis with hints of wood, deep garnet color with hints of purple, rich flavors are beautifully balanced with ripe cherry, cassis, blackberry, plum, fleshy rich texture with amazing structure and depth, perfectly balanced with a long finish that leaves you wanting another sip. This is a historic Chateau! "Chateau de Chasseloir is a former earldom which belonged to the Leloup de Chasseloir family. This 14th and 15th century property overlooking the Maine was destroyed during the Wars of the Vendee. The only remains are a tower, some ramparts and a cellar. The Barrel cellar is unique in the Nantais vineyard with its old sculptured pillars, its Rabelaisian figurines, its windows evoking the vine and wine and its old wine-making tools: it's a real museum. The vineyard lies on a geological fracture of metamorphous soil composed of shale. The clay-enriched gneiss enables the roots of the vines to penetrate several metres down into the crumbly rock. The Chateau de Chasseloir Comte Leloup Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie is made exclusively from one hundred year old vines, the oldest Muscadet vines. Each year the grapes are picked by hand and vinified separately from the rest of the estate. The wine has an international reputation as being some of the best from the region!" The grape here is Melon de Bougogne, it offers lively fresh aromas of sea breeze. Ripe melon and light lemon peel, the palate is bursting with freshness with briny melon flavors and lively acidity and touch of mineral. It is distinctive, refreshing and delicious. Beautiful long dry finish. Drink now to 2017.
