Notes from Doug
Many of you are familiar with the incredible Rhone wines made by the father/son team at famed producer Guigal. This week we are pleased to offer a selection of their incredible red, white and rose Rhone wines. Here is what Robert Parker has to say "The father/son team of Marcel and Philippe Guigal continue to keep their estate at the top of the hierarchy in the Rhône Valley. All the way from their inexpensive Côtes du Rhône to their top-end Côte Rôties and Hermtiage, the attention to detail and focus on quality is unmatched. I'll say it again here, this estate is producing some of the most incredible and singular wines in the world." This is a great opportunity to stock up on some of the best Rhone wines in the world with prices starting at just under $14 bottle on up! There is something for everyone on this list. I will tell you that having tasting many vintages over my career I consider them to be on my short list of favorite top producers of distinctive world class Rhone wines. The Wines
Rose
E. Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone Rose 2014
Bottle $15.99 10% off mix 6 $14.39 15% off mix 12 $13.59
Winemaker's Notes
The Cotes du Rhone Rose is an excellent example of the appellation. Produced by saigné from Grenache, Syrah, and Cinsault, this dry rosé is fruity and rich with an intriguing and appetizing bitterness on the finish. There are no better wines to drink with informal buffets, summer outdoor meals, and spicy foods.
Whites
E. Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone White 2013
Bottle $15.99 10% off mix 6 $14.39 15% off mix 12 $13.59
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 90 Points "A great vintage for whites, the 2013 Cotes du Rhone Blanc (mostly Viognier) has outstanding notes of white peach and tangerine to go with an elegant, seamless style on the palate. It's a smoking value to drink over the coming 1-2 years."
E. Guigal - Crozes-Hermitage - White 2013
Bottle $29.99 10% off mix 6 $27.39 15% off mix 12 $25.49
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 90 Points A blend of 95% Marsanne and 5% Roussanne, the 2013 Crozes Hermitage Blanc is also outstanding. Almond paste, crushed rock, white flower and peachy notes all flow to a medium-bodied, elegant and pure 2013 white that will drink well for 3-5 years.
E. Guigal St. Joseph White 2013
Bottle $35.99 10% off mix 6 $32.39 15% off mix 12 $30.59
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 91 Points "Offering more richness, texture and flesh, the shockingly good 2013 Saint Joseph Blanc (all from the southern part of the appellation) is medium to full-bodied, ripe and downright sexy, with tons of fruit, integrated acidity and a great finish. Loaded with notes of white currants, citrus blossom and toasted almonds, enjoy it over the coming 3-5 years."
E. Guigal Lieu Dit White St Joseph 2013
Bottle $79.99 10% off mix 6 $71.99 15% off mix 12 $67.99
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 94 Points"One of the top whites in the appellation, Guigal's 2013 Saint Joseph Lieu Dit Saint Joseph Blanc comes from the pure granite soils of the namesake vineyard of the appellation and is a blend of 93% Marsanne and 7% Roussanne. It was aged in slightly less new oak in 2013 (prior vintages saw 100% new) with the goal to make it more approachable on release. Now aged 12 months in two-thirds new and one-third 2-year-old barrels, it sports a medium-gold color to go with sensational notes of crème brulee, caramelized peach, toast and almond paste, with additional minerality emerging on the palate. Full-bodied, rich and textured, it's a serious Saint Joseph Blanc that will stand toe-to-toe with some top white Hermitage. Drink it over the coming decade or more."
E. Guigal Condrieu 2013
Bottle $69.99 10% off mix 6 $62.99 15% off mix 12 $59.49
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 92 Points "more focused and reserved than the 2012. It offers pretty notes of tangerine, mint, citrus blossom and crushed rock to go with a medium-bodied, fresh, focused style on the palate. It will be better in another year and have 2-4 years of longevity."
E. Guigal Condrieu LaDoriane 2013 (Limited)
Bottle $145 10% off mix 6 $130.50 15% off mix 12 $123.25
Robert Parker 96 Points Slightly more fresh and focused than the 2012, the 2013 Condrieu la Doriane (aged 9 months in 100% new French oak) exhibits a vibrant bouquet of white flowers, white peach, tangerine and bitter citrus. This is followed by a medium to full-bodied, pure, elegant Condrieu that has terrific depth and richness to go with vibrant acidity, a focused texture and a great finish. It will be better next year and drink nicely through 2018.
E. Guigal Ex-Voto White 2007
Bottle $205 10% off mix 6 $184.50 15% off mix 12 $174.25
Wine Spectator 95 Points "Intense, with gorgeously pure salted butter, brioche, paraffin, creamed yellow apple, anise and persimmon notes all woven together and pushed by a broad but well-focused finish. This has the length to let everything take an encore. Impressive. Drink now through 2020."
Red Wines
E. Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone Red 2010
Bottle $15.99 10% off mix 6 $14.39 15% off mix 12 $13.59
Tanzer 90 PointsInternational Wine Cellar - "Opaque ruby. Smoky cherry and black raspberry aromas are complicated by olive, allspice and licorice, with a sexy floral quality in the background. Sappy dark berry and lavender pastille flavors display impressive depth and power without excess weight. Closes sweet, gently tannic and long, with lingering spice and floral pastille notes. "
E. Guigal Crozes-Hermitage Red 2011
Bottle $25.99 10% off mix 6 $23.39 15% off mix 12 $22.09
Tanzer 91 Points
Robert Parker the 2011 Crozes-Hermitage is a blend of 100% Syrah that will spend 24 months in older barrels and foudre. Classic Syrah, with ample smoked bacon fat, blackberry, raspberry, licorice and white pepper, this pretty, supple effort will be ready to go on release and drink nicely for 7-8 years or more.
E. Guigal St. Joseph Red 2012
BBottle $35.99 10% off mix 6 $32.39 15% off mix 12 $30.59
Robert Parker 92 Points "As good, if not better, than the 2011, the 2012 Saint Joseph has lots of ripeness in its sexy black fruits, chocolate, vanilla and smoked meat aromas and flavors. I suspect that by the time this sees the inside of a bottle, the oak will have integrated and it will show a more classic profile. Medium to full-bodied, textured and nicely concentrated, it too will have a decade or more prime drinking.
E. Guigal Gigondas 2011
Bottle $35.99 10% off mix 6 $32.39 15% off mix 12 $30.59
Robert Parkers Wine Advocate 90 Points "The 2011 Gigondas has lots of kirsch, sweet cherries, spice and cedar wood to go with a medium-bodied, perfumed, Provencal style. It should drink well for a decade or more."
E. Guigal Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2009
Bottle $54.99 10% off mix 6 $49.49 15% off mix 12 $46.74
Robert Parkers Wine Advocate 94 Points "The deep plum/purple-colored 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape exhibits a sweet perfume of kirsch, charcoal, roasted herbs and bouquet garni. Dense, meaty, full-bodied, pure and rich, it will probably not be bottled for at least two more years. It should drink well for 20 years. "
E. Guigal Lieu Dit Red St Joseph 2012
Bottle $79.99 10% off mix 6 $71.99 15% off mix 12 $67.99
Robert Parkers Wine Advocate 94 Points the 2012 Saint Joseph Lieu Dit Saint Joseph (aged 24 months in new oak) has a slightly fuller, more substantial feel than the 2011. Cassis, black fruits, dark chocolate and lots of minerality all emerge from this full-bodied, concentrated 2012. It still has some oak to integrate, so give it a few years in the cellar.
E. Guigal - Brune et Blonde de Guigal 2010
Bottle $79.99 10% off mix 6 $71.99 15% off mix 12 $67.99
Robert Parkers Wine Advocate 93+ Points "A wine I reviewed earlier this year, the 2010 Cote Rotie Brune et Blonde is a stunning Cote Rotie. Made from 96% Syrah and 4% Viognier and aged in equal parts new and once used barrels, it's medium to full-bodied, elegant and seamless, with rocking notes of raspberries, peppered bacon, coffee bean and violets. Drink it anytime over the coming decade or more."
E. Guigal Hermitage Red 2010
Bottle $89.99 10% off mix 6 $80.99 15% off mix 12 $76.49
Robert Parkers Wine Advocate 95 Points"The 2010 Hermitage may be even richer, something I did not notice when tasting the 2010 and 2009 side by side last year. It reveals even more power backed up by enormous quantities of creme de cassis and blackberry jam intermixed with hints of graphite, camphor and toasty oak. Full-bodied and rich with more minerality and precision than the softer, more plump and viscous 2009, the 2010 is another 30+ year wine from Guigal. "
E. Guigal Cote Rotie Chateau de Ampuis 2010
Bottle $210 10% off mix 6 $189 15% off mix 12 $178.50
Robert Parker 99 Points "The 2010 Cote Rotie Chateau d'Ampuis is an off-the-hook effort that easily competes with the more expensive single-vineyard releases. Seamless, gorgeously pure and seriously concentrated and full-bodied, it's an insanely gorgeous Syrah offers layers of creme de cassis, vanilla bean, creamy licorice and smoked meat aromas and flavors. Still a baby, it needs to be forgotten for 4-5 years, at which point it should offer another two decades or more of longevity. Don't miss this beauty!"
E. Guigal Ex Voto Ermitage 2007 (Very limited)
Bottle $430 10% off mix 6 $387 15% off mix 12 $365.50
Robert Parker 98 Points "the spectacular 2007 Hermitage Ex-Voto exhibits a discrete hint of oak (despite its 42 month aging in 100% new French oak) along with plenty of creme de cassis, lead pencil shaving and blackberry liqueur characteristics. Full-bodied with magnificent concentration and richness, silky tannins and a long, long finish, this remarkable 2007 is the Hermitage of the vintage. It should drink well for 30-40+ years."
