The classic white blend of Conundrum begins with intriguing aromas of green apple, tangerine and honeysuckle blossoms. The taste is best described as exotic; with layers of peach, apricot nectar, green melon and pear, overlaid with subtle notes of citrus zest and spicy vanilla. A rich, round mouth-feel supported by fresh acidity, brings the complexity of this wine into balance.  Drink now to 2017.

This is a delicious red blend.  Intensely colored and fragrant, the wine opens up with evocative aromas of blackberry, raspberry, rhubarb and cola. On the palate, the wine is full bodied and exuberantly fruity, pairing black cherry, plum and pomegranate notes with more soulful cinnamon, lavender and cocoa nuances. The tannins are super smooth and supple, and the finish is long with enticing notes of brown spice, bramble fruits, and vanilla.  Drink now to 2017.

Shafer Wines

Robert Parker"Year in year out, this is one of the superstar wineries, not only in Napa Valley and all of California, but in the entire world. It's the product of visionary John Shafer, who started in 1978 after a successful corporate career. He had the foresight and visionary genius to believe in the microclimates and soils of Stags Leap of the southern Napa Valley. When his son Doug came on board with their brilliant winemaker and Mr. Everything, Elias Fernandez, things soared in quality and diversity. Today, this is a winery that does everything about as perfect as can be. They have kept their feet, heads and egos grounded, and continue to kick proverbial ass with every vintage. They made some of the very finest, possibly the Cabernet Sauvignon of the vintage in 2011, and in 2012 and 2013, they have crafted one profound wine after another. For starters, their Chardonnay has always been a non-malolactic Chardonnay, of which 75% is barrel-fermented and the other quarter in stainless steel. As good as it is it's hard to believe they produce a whopping 6,400 cases of it. John and Doug Shafer, along with Elias Fernandez, have certainly excelled at turning out gorgeous Merlots that are concentrated and fleshy as well as elegant. A big success for Shafer has been their Stags Leap One Point Five Cabernet Sauvignon. They make between 6,000-7,000 cases of this wine in any vintage. About one-third of their famous Hillside Vineyard, which represents 100% of their flagship wine Hillside Select, goes into this cuvee.

Robert Parkers Wine Advocate 94 Points "The 2013 Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch looks like one of their all-time greats, and to date they've all been very impressive wines. The crisp tangerine, honeyed citrus, pear and white peach notes are prominent in this beautifully fruited medium to full-bodied Chardonnay that shows additional orange marmalade notes in the mouth. It's textured, crisp acid, from having not gone through malolactic, gives it focus and zest, and the overall impression is one of brilliant richness subtly touched by smoke, but letting the fruit dominate.

The wine has an opaque bluish/purple color, almost indigo, and is full-bodied with dense chocolaty crème de cassis notes, licorice and a touch of minerality. The wine has well-integrated wood, is full and seems balanced and rich enough to age for two decades or more."

Robert Parkers Wine Advocate 90 Points" The 2012 Merlot, which comes in at 15.5% natural alcohol, is a beauty. It's 91% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest a touch of Malbec. The wine reveals notes of black cherries, tobacco leaf, mocha and darker-berried fruit with a hint of white chocolate. It's ripe, medium to full-bodied, but fresh, elegant and well-delineated. This beauty should drink well for a decade or more."
