The Great 2010 Vintage Barolo's Presale!

Notes from Doug

There are those rare vintages that come along in time which seem to redefine the greatness of the wines from that particular region. If you are a fan of the great Barolo's of Italy's Piedmont region, then the 2010 vintage looks to be a classic one that looks to do just that. Below I have put together a list of 10 incredible Barolo's (some magnums available too) which represent some of the greatest wines and producers of the region. In some cases the wines are very limited with quantities listed as of the time I published this list. If you are interested, please reply to this email quickly and I will confirm orders promptly. As always, we appreciate your business and the opportunity to serve you and bring you great wines from around the world.

Cheers

Doug

Vintage 2010 Overview By Antonio Galloni

"The 2010 Barolos have all of the attributes of a cool, late-ripening vintage; expressive aromatics, chiseled fruit, plenty of site-specificity and the potential to develop beautifully for years and decades in bottle. At the same time, the wines have gorgeous depth and richness. A number of growers mentioned that the berry size was small in 2010, which explains why the wines have the tannic presence they do. The 2010 Barolos are also several notches higher in quality and far more exciting than the 2009s. Readers who have tasted the 2010s from Tuscany (especially Chianti Classico) and/or the 2010 Red Burgundies will have a very clear idea of the style of the vintage. It is a year that will appeal to classicists, as the wines are translucent and incredibly expressive. Stylistically, the 2010s remind me of the 2004s, but with more mid-palate pliancy and overall depth. Simply put, 2010 is the greatest young Barolo vintage I have tasted in 18 years of visiting the region and a lifetime of buying, cellaring and drinking these wines."

The Wines

Ceretto Barolo DOCG 2010

Bottle $49.99  10% off mix 6 $44.99

15% off mix 12 $42.49

Robert Parker 93 Points  "The 2010 Barolo plays all the right cards. As far as base Barolo goes, this is a charming wine. It's one of the best made in the 2010 vintage with soft lines, firm structure and a bursting personality. The bouquet is brimming with Nebbiolo-driven aromas of anise seed, cola, licorice and white almond skin. Fruit tones are delicate and ethereal with cassis and dried raspberry at the front. In the mouth, the wine is graceful and silky."  Drink now to 2025.

Vajra Barolo 2010

Bottle $49.99  10% off mix 6 $44.99

15% off mix 12 $42.49

Magnums available Bottle $99.99 10% off mix 6 $89.99 15% off mix 12 $84.99

Wine Enthusiast 94 Points Editors Choice"Intense floral scents of freshly cut roses and wild violets jump out of the glass. On the palate, darrk cherry and crushed cherry twine with allspice, cinnamon, clove, leather and alpine herbs. All are partnered by assertive but supple tannins and fresh acidity. Best 2015-2030. Editors' Choice"

Vinous / Antonio Galloni 93+ Points- "The 2010 Barolo Albe has begun to close down in bottle. Today, the tannins dominate over the fruit, although from time to time the wine's personality begins to emerge. Rose petal, mint, sage and licorice meld together in a supple, racy Barolo endowed with both tons of near-term appeal and the potential to develop beautifully in bottle. Vajra crafts the Albe to be accessible young, but 2010 is a vintage in which a few years in bottle will only help. The Albe is one of the very finest Barolos in its price range.

Wine Spectator 91 Points - "Rose, cherry and graphite aromas signal this elegant Barolo, while the dusty tannins play out on the finish. Elegant and chewy, with tobacco and underbrush details on the finish. Best from 2017 through 2027."

Alessandria Barolo Monvigliero 2010

Bottle $69.99   10% off mix 6 62.99

15% off mix 12 $59.49

Robert Parkers Wine Advocate 96 Points "The 2010 Barolo Monvigliero shows a pretty degree of color salutation with brilliant garnet and ruby highlights. The bouquet is broad and wide-sweeping with a healthy succession of red berry, sweet almond, stone fruit, medicinal herb and crushed mineral. Fruit thrives from 220 to 280 meters above sea level with full southern exposures facing La Morra. They own 1.5 hectares of the 20-hectare single vineyard. An important cru, Monvigliero is fifth most identified vineyard designate in Barolo after Cannubi, Bussia, Brunate and Rocche dell'Annunziata. Fratelli Alessandria keeps its Barolo in oak casks for three years, instead of two. The wine shows light spice notes with distant touches of dark fruit. The tannins are silky and long. The wine is amazing expressive now, but promises great aging potential. Drink: 2017-2033."

Wine Enthusiast 95 Points "This offering comes from one of Barolo's top producers and one of the best vineyard areas in the entire denomination. It delivers classic Nebbiolo sensations of ripe black cherry, fleshy raspberry and wild strawberry accented by white pepper, cinnamon, leather and uplifting mineral notes. With firm but polished tannins and bright acidity, it's already accessible..."

La Spinetta Barolo Garretti 2010

Bottle $74.99 10% off mix 6 $67.49

15% off mix 12 $63.74

Robert Parkers Wine Advocate 94 Points "The 2010 Barbaresco Vigneto Gallina comes from low-yield producing old vines in Neive. The wine is immensely pleasurable and bright with beautiful aromatic intensity that shines bright from the glass. Only 900 cases are produced. This vineyard expression offers notable freshness and brightness that make it suitable for long cellar aging. This is a truly magnificent wine. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2028."

Pecchenino Barolo Le Coste 2010

Bottle $74.99 10% off mix 6 $67.49

15% off mix 12 $63.74

Antonio Galloni 96 Points "Another dazzling wine, the 2010 Barolo Le Coste races across the palate with bright red cherry, plum, spice, hard candy, mint and rose petal overtones. The Le Coste is a bit more primary, perfumed, sweet and pliant - especially through the mid-palate - than the San Giuseppe. Sinewy, powerful and tannic, the Le Coste is what traditionally made Barolo is all about. The 2010 spent three years in cask." -- Antonio Galloni

AZELIA Barolo 2010 Magnums 1.5 Liter only

Bottle $130   10% off mix 6 $117   15% off mix 12 $110.50

Wine Spectator 92 Points "The chewy texture gives definition to the cherry, plum, licorice and tar flavors. The tannins are surprisingly civilized, making this Barolo relatively open and fluid for the vintage. Tightens up on the finish. Best from 2017 through 2030. 2,200 cases made.

Domenico Clerico "Pajana" Barolo 2010 (19 bottles available)

Bottle $105   10% off mix 6 $94.50

15% off mix 12 $89.25

Robert Parkers Wine Advocate 93 Points "The 2010 Barolo Pajana is a stunning wine that shows the power and heft of the vintage. Its texture is soft and enduring with sweet almond, toasted hazelnut, bright cherry, spice and tobacco. The young tannins require more time to soften and integrate. Drink: 2017-2032

Domenico Clerico "Ciabot Mentin" Barolo 2010 (25 bottles available)

Bottle $105   10% off mix 6 $94.50

15% off mix 12 $89.25

Robert Parkers Wine Advocate 94 Points "The 2010 Barolo Ciabot Mentin opens to a deep, dark color and tarry aromas of dark fruit and liquid smoke. The use of oak is bold but contained, adding extra layering to the supple finish. The power and elegance of the vintage co"mes though at this early stage although the wine clearly needs more time to evolve. Drink: 2017-2030."

Arriving May:

Paolo Conterno "Riva del Bric" Barolo 2010

Bottle $59.99   10% off mix 6 $53.99

15% off mix 12 $50.99

Robert Parkers Wine Advocate 93 Points "The 2010 Barolo Riva del Bric shows a high degree of floral intensity with pressed violets and rose followed by bright red fruit and distant spice. The maceration period is relatively brief (15 days) and this has helped to fix the wine's intensity, both in terms of its appearance and its bouquet. Vinification includes three years in botte grande. Mineral nuances and fresh acidity characterize the finish. Drink: 2017-2028."

Paolo Conterno "Ginestra" Barolo 2010

Bottle $89.99   10% off mix 6 $80.99

15% off mix 12 $76.49

Robert Parkers Wine Advocate 94 Points "The 2010 Barolo Ginestra is a territory-driven wine that reflects all of the characteristics associated with the Ginestra cru. It shows elegant mineral and floral aromas backed by an extremely soft and supple tannic quality. This single-vineyard often shows silky tannins that set it apart from much of Monforte d'Alba's more structured wines. Barolo Ginestra also boasts a deep sense of energy and tension that should hold forth over the course of time. Drink: 2017-2030
