BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE

Evaluation helps agencies 'learn more about our clients and ourselves'

"This was invaluable training and the first thing I did upon returning to the office was get right to work!"

What generates such enthusiasm?
It's the Building Evaluation Capacity program run by the Nonprofit Support Program (NSP) at the Hartford Foundation.

The program is designed to help nonprofits use evaluation to track and improve their programs and operations to better fulfill their missions, said Amy Studwell, the NSP program officer who oversees the program.

SOMEPLACE TO JUST TALK

DebUllman_YWCAAdvanced Leaders Circle provides nonprofit leaders a place to share experiences, expertise

After decades as a business executive and as the CEO of a nonprofit organization, Deborah Ullman was no stranger to leadership training programs.

Then why sign up for the Advanced Leaders Circle, sponsored by the Nonprofit Support Program (NSP) at the Hartford Foundation?

"I knew it was different. I just needed a place to talk about sticky issues and get ideas for solving them, knowing that it would all be held in confidence," Deb said.

OUR HELPING HAND FOR NONPROFITS
Message from
Linda J. Kelly, President

We're proud of the fact that the Hartford Foundation provides capacity building assistance to 60 percent of its grantees, six times the national average, according to a study by the national Center for Effective Philanthropy of more than 400 foundations.

Our Nonprofit Support Program, under the leadership of Annemarie Riemer, is the backbone of that assistance.

CONNECTING THE DOTS
Fellowship offers bird's-eye view of philanthropy
SedMiles-group_CC

Sedrick Miles has seen philanthropy at work at the local level - "the grassroots" - as a mentor and manager at nonprofits. Now he's viewing it from another angle - what he calls "the stratosphere" - during a yearlong fellowship at the Hartford Foundation.

TWO NONPROFITS ACHIEVE SUCCESS WITH NSP PROGRAMS

Getting 7,000 Works of Art and Artifacts to Go Global

How do you take a historic collection of nearly 7,000 works of art, artifacts, and archives and make it available -with a few clicks on a screen -for education, leisure and scholarly pursuits to anyone around the world?

Ultimately, that's what The Amistad Center for Art & Culture wants to do with their outstanding collection, which documents more than 300 years of the artistic, literary and military history of enslaved and free people of African descent in America.

FROM THE HEART...

Growing Latino Philanthropy

"Generosity is a part of Latino culture. You can ask any Latino and they can tell you a family member or friend they have helped financially," says Germán Bermúdez, chair of the steering committee of the Latino Endowment Fund at Hartford Foundation for Public Giving.
