Moving Forward with Attempt Survivors

Dequincy Lezine, Ph.D.

After years of being hidden and kept quiet, voices and courageous people who survived a suicide attempt finally were welcomed into the suicide prevention community officially in April, 2014 as the new Suicide Attempt Survivor and Lived Experience division. Led by Dr. Dequincy Levine, this group has shared a message that recovery is possible. They wrote about their near-death experiences and the revelations they had from their darkest days. Now they are taking on new initiatives and Dr. Levine outlines some of them in the following article.

The Rise Above Fest 2014

Rocking for a cause proves huge success!

SAVE was extremely honored to partner with the platinum selling artists Seether and Avenged Seven Fold at the 2nd annual Rise Above Fest in Bangor, Maine in May. The Rise Above Fest, first established in 2012 by Seether after their lead singer, Shaun Morgan, lost his brother to suicide in 2007, was an opportunity for Shaun and the band to use music in their grief and to help others. This year Seether selected SAVE to be a partner in the event and the charity connected to the cause. 12 local and national bands played for 10 hours and helped raise awareness about suicide prevention and SAVE. What is the Role of Vitamin D in

Depression?Shauna

By Zainab Samaan, MBChB, PhD, MRCPsych, Rebecca Anglin, MD, PhD, Guowei Li, and Lehana Thabane, PhD

Depression is a common psychiatric disorder that affects 11.23% of the population in the western world. However, the rates of depression vary greatly by geographic location, age, and sex, as well as other factors. Depression is a disabling disorder, and the search for optimal treatment is ongoing. There are varied treatment options available that are generally effective. However, applicability and treatment responses are limited, and some treatments can have serious adverse effects. Several factors are associated with an increased risk of depression and vitamin D deficiency has been purposed as one such risk.

Bravelets: A For-Profit Company with Giving and Bravery at its Core
Bravelets

When Stephanie Hansen's mother told her that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer, Stephanie was devastated to say the least. As she held back tears Stephanie instantly knew she had to be brave for her Mom and her Mom wanted to be brave for her family. Out of this progressions, the name Bravelets was established.

Stephanie wanted to put together something that her sister, Mom and Dad could wear in the weeks leading to her mother's mastectomy - a symbol that they could all look at and remember to be brave.

SAVE is very happy to be partnered with Bravelets. For every SAVE Bravelets item sold, $10 will be donated to SAVE. Get your inspirational jewelry today here: SAVE Bravelets Jewelry.

Passionate Volunteer Joins SAVE Team Jennifer

Meet Alyssa Stadtler - Events Assistant

In February, SAVE welcomed Alyssa Stadtler to assist with the 2014 events season.  Alyssa began volunteering with SAVE two years ago when suicide shook her community.  In response to this tragic loss, Alyssa coordinated a 5K walk and helped bring hope and healing to her community. The experience moved Alyssa so much that she has decided to focus her life and her career helping carry out SAVE's mission.

"Working with an organization like this is something I love, it brings me hope that there are so many people that love to help people in any way they can" Alyssa said, "and that's what it's all about for me."
