Schools and ADHD-
The Ideal-
According to Wright's Law, the OCR Memrandun: Evaluation of Children who May Have ADD/ADHD, published by the Office of Civil Rights in 1992, clarifies that SCHOOLS MUST EVAlUATE children who are suspected of having a disability, including ADD, after a request from the parent. |
|
The Reality
A struggling student's school psychologist contacted us recently to help find affordable treatment. When asked why the school wasn't stepping forward to provide the funding, she replied, "...Regarding the school district paying for an evaluation, I can see the smoke going up from our administrators-at even the suggestion.
We are instructed to be ever-so-careful when we "encourage" that a child be evaluated. If we sound like we are recommending or insisting, the school district could be held liable to pay for it.
In other words, that is an absolute no-no. ..."

Greetings!
I never thought I'd be happy to get a new boss, but Brandon and I are thrilled to have an Executive Director back at the helm! Please join us in welcoming Laura Del Ragno, MSW to the organization.
Joan Jager, Volunteer
and Brandon Koch, Operations Coordinator
Hello, I want to say a quick hi and to tell you how excited I am to be on board again! I was with ADD Resources as a Master's Social Work Intern back in 2008 to 2009. After working for 10 years in social work, I began the MSW program at University of Washington -Tacoma. I finished my degree in June 2010. The nature of the work of this organization has been close to me personally for most of my life. I look forward to sharing more with you in the months to come and hopefully to personally meet some of you at our upcoming conferences.

You CAN get organized for Tax Time!
By Coach Laura Roland
"You don't know it yet but, at the end of this article you're going to feel a lot more confident about how an ADHD Adult can get organized for tax time.
Adult ADHD and getting organized to file taxes are not a good combination. Many of my clients, especially single people or two-ADHD couples, are burdened with guilt and worry about late or unfilled taxes...." More>>>
Conversation Frustration
By Cindy Goldrich, Ed.M., ACAC
"...Four Components to a Conversation As Newton's law teaches us, every action has a re-action. The re-action we have to someone's actions is generally based on a few variables: our concerns, our expectations, our relationships and our personal anxiety levels. In truth, there are always four components to a conversation -
- the speaker's words,
- the speaker's intent,
- the listener's reaction,
- and the listener's response, be it verbal or otherwise.
- So much can go wrong with so many uncontrolled variables, it's no wonder there is so much misunderstanding that often leads to anger and frustration..." More>>>

Sometimes the answer is to hit the
Here are a few ways that I have found to be useful in being more present:
- Just breathe. As you are sitting at your desk, take deep full breaths. In as little as 90 seconds you can bring yourself back to now.
- When you exercise focus on your form and breathing. Notice your feet moving and your breath as it goes in and out.
- When you are engaged in daily routines, like washing dishes or cooking, focus on what you are doing. We are often in a rush to finish, but instead you could use these times as an opportunity to be mindful..." More>>>
