Celebrate Poetry in April and All Year Long!
Guest Blog Post
by Kristine O'Connell George
April is National Poetry Month, and I'm honored to welcome nationally-acclaimed children's poet Kristine O'Connell George as a guest blogger on Corkboard Connections. I've loved Kristine's poetry for many years because she writes in simple terms about issues that are important to children and young adults. I was thrilled when Kristine agreed to write a guest blog post for me, and I loved her article, "Falling in Love ... With a Poem." Kristine shares her love of poetry with us and offers tips for teachers who want to foster a love of poetry in their students. Please visit Corkboard Connections and get inspired to celebrate poetry this month and all year long!

Free Green Court Claims Earth Day (or Week) Lesson
Common Core Aligned
for Grades 4 - 6
Monday is Earth Day, but why not celebrate Earth Week instead? Green Court Claims is a lesson I posted last year on Corkboard Connections in which you ask students to evaluate company claims that their products are earth-friendly or "green." Students work in teams to research the facts about these claims and then present their findings to the class. It's a terrific research and writing activity, and it actually meets a number of Common Core Standards for Reading Informational Text in Grades 4 through 6. It also meets every single Speaking and Listening Standard! You'll find the specific standards listed in the packet at the end of the lesson. Read about the lesson in these two blog posts on Corkboard Connections:
Or you can download the lesson from my Science Page on Teaching Resources.

Pay It Forward Day - Spread a Little Cheer!
Did you know that Thursday, April 25th, is Pay It Forward Day? Here's a simple activity you can have your students complete on that day. This activity page explains the meaning of "pay it forward" and asks students to do at least six good deeds. Each good deed is recorded in one of the clouds. You can ask students to bring their completed papers back the next day to share their experiences. It's a fun way to spread a little good will! You can download this freebie from my Seasonal Page on Teaching Resources.
