Taking the Mystery Out of Vocabulary Study

Two Freebies and a Fun Game

Learning new vocabulary is critical to student success, but studying vocabulary isn't always that exciting. I used several different strategies in my classroom and I enjoyed sharing them on Corkboard Connections last week. Both of those strategies come with a downloadable freebie.

Mystery Vocabulary Detectives Mystery Vocabulary Detectives

I also created an exciting game that I know your students will LOVE! Mystery Vocabulary Detectives is a Common Core aligned game in which players take turns being Detectives and Eyewitnesses. In each round, the Eyewitness secretly selects a vocabulary card from a prepared deck and begins giving clues about the word's meaning. The Detectives have to figure out what the word is based on the clues. Since I don't have a class myself right now, I asked some of my Facebook friends to field test it with their students. Apparently, Mystery Vocabulary Detectives was a smash hit with both the students and the teachers. The kids thought it was great fun, and the teachers liked that it is aligned with Common Core Vocabulary Standards. You can find it in my TeachersPayTeachers Store

Brand New Pinterest Board

I have just created a brand new Pinterest board called Caring Classroom. It's a place where I'll be pinning free resources to foster a caring classroom. For example, I'll pin blog posts with getting to know you games, cooperative learning activities, books dealing with bullying, friendship books, blog posts about teaching diversity, and so on. I'm excited to have a place to collect these resources, and I invite you to follow it and any other of my boards that interest you. You can find all of my Pinterest boards here.

Games for Learning the 50 States Games for Learning the 50 States

Do you teach states and capitals in your curriculum? My most recent blog post on Corkboard Connections focuses on fun activities to review states and capitals. I found a terrific free interactive website to share, and I also created a fun game for learning the states and capitals called Find the States Showdown. You can read about the game in the blog post, or find it on TeachersPayTeachers where you can preview the entire game online.

US Maps and Test ComboIf this is an area you test, you can check out the packet of US Regions and Capitals tests that my daughter Wendy put together. She's the artist behind Digital Classroom Clipart, and she put together an awesome packet of tests and answer keys. She also created all of the US maps I used in my Find the Showdown activity and that she used in her tests. You can eve purchase them for your own use. Click to view her US Maps and Tests Combo
