Ya'll Are the Best!
I really want to thank you for your support during my transition to selling digital materials through TpT. To tell you the truth, I was pretty nervous about the whole change because it was a big one for me. However, because of the fantastic support I received, the whole experience has been overwhelmingly positive. In fact, I was delighted to discover my name on the Top 10 list this week! Yet I know that being on that list was totally due to YOUR support! You'll never know how much it means to me to have this kind of support. Ya'll are the best!

CCSS Aligned
Discussion Prompts
Grade Level Specific Sets Based on ELA Standards
Teaching the new Common Core Standards is challenging to say the least. To make it easier for you to guide your students through effective and focused discussions, I've created sets of CCSS Aligned Reading Discussion Prompts. Each grade level combo pack includes prompts for whole class discussions as well as coordinating Talking Sticks task cards for small reading group discussions.
This week I finished the 1st Grade set, so I now have sets available for 1st through 5th grade. Click the CCSS Discussion Prompts link to find all of them in one place. I hope they lighten your load a bit!

Seasonal Freebies on Teaching Resources
Looking for some special activities to use in February? Don't forget that I have a Seasonal page on Teaching Resources that I update each month with new freebies and teaching materials. The February Activities Mini Pack is free this month, too!

Black History Character Biographies
Free Writing and
Research Resource
During February, many classrooms celebrate Black History month. Students often research famous Black Americans and write a report or share the information in some way. Unfortunately, many students don't know how to research, organize, and write a report and do far too much copying and pasting. The Character Trait Bio activity is a little different from the normal writing assignment because students are asked to organize their essays around character traits which makes plagiarism almost impossible. You can download this freebie from my TpT store. If you like it, please take a moment to leave feedback. Thanks!

Have Fun with Literary Lunch Bunches!
Meet CCSS Standards for
Speaking and Listening
Most teachers are familiar with their CCSS standards for math and reading, but how well do you know the Speaking and Listening Standards? In the elementary grades, the first CCSS Speaking & Listening standard reads like this, "Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade x topics and texts, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly." I love how this standard focuses on the importance of getting kids involved in collaborative discussions!
Literary Lunch Bunch
Bookmark Freebie
One way to meet this standard is to include Classroom Book Clubs in your curriculum. If you're not sure you have time to do that, you can start by hosting Literary Lunch Bunch Meetings. Read about this powerful and fun strategy on Corkboard Connections and download the free Literary Lunch Bunch bookmarks you'll need for the program.

Powerful Little Books - Perfect for Little Hands
Meet Issy, the young illustrator of these emergent reader books!
Who would have imagined that a 5-year old could become the illustrator of a series of books for children? My friend and colleague Pat Calfee wrote this set of emergent reader books based on characters that were invented by her granddaughter, Issy. Then Issy illustrated each one. I received a set of these books in the mail a few days ago and loved them so much that I asked Pat to share the story of how she and Issy came to write them. Not only are the books cute, they are actually powerful tools for beginning readers! Pat wrote them based on key words and using simple sentence structures, just perfect for children who are learning to read. If you teach young children or have young children or grandchildren yourself, I know you'll want to read Pat's guest blog post on Corkboard Connections. Please leave a comment there for Pat and Issy!
