NRA-PVF Endorses Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan for President and Vice President

The National Rifle Association's Political Victory Fund has announced its endorsement of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan for President and Vice President.  NRA's Executive Vice President, Wayne LaPierre, and NRA-ILA Executive Director, Chris W. Cox, made the announcement this week in Fishersville, Virginia, during a rally with both Gov. Mitt Romney (R) and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) in attendance.  Also attending, and performing at the press conference, was country music superstar and NRA Life Member Trace Adkins.

"Virginia is ground zero--the front line of this election. This is where the race could be won or lost. This is where the difference can be made. This is where gun owners must make that difference." said LaPierre.

"Today, we live in an America that is getting harder to recognize every day, led by a President who mocks our values, belittles our faith, and is threatened by our freedom." said Cox. "So on behalf of the four million men and women of the National Rifle Association, representing tens of millions of NRA supporters, it is my honor to announce the NRA's endorsement of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan for President and Vice President of the United States."

NRA PVF Releases Candidate Rating for MA Elections
The NRA has finally finished their ratings page for MA national and state level elections.

Take note, not a single incumbent candidate running for U.S. Congress is rated higher than a "C" (Senator Scott Brown) with the rest of them all receiving "F" grades. If you care about civil rights, and want to be sure that they are protected at the federal level, be sure to get out and vote this November

Honing the Concealed-Carry Mindset

Carrying a gun for self-defense requires the proper mindset.

We live in an amazing modern world of turn-key solutions. Especially in America, we have an astounding variety of tools, technology and instant access to information at our finger tips for solving our day-to-day problems. While many of these assets are convenient, they can make us mentally lazy if we let them. We could start to think that being in possession of the "right" or "best" equipment will solve our problems for us. To help shake off this mass media languor, here are a few tips to consider when sharpening up your concealed-carry mindset:

Concealed Firearms Do Not Make Us "Safe"

When was the last time you heard someone say, "I am so glad to have my driver's license, a good set of seat belts and air bags in my car. Now I can drive down that iced-over canyon road as fast as I want." Most of us would agree that driving with this kind of attitude is both impractical and dangerous. Instead, when we think of automotive safety, we look to defensive driving techniques to keep us safe. It's understood that devices like seat belts and air bags are the last line of defense, not the first. Drivers around the world get to their destinations safely each day, not because of the equipment in their car, but because of their good driving habits.

This practice-good-habits approach should be applied to carrying a concealed handgun as well. One bad habit in particular that can get folks into trouble when carrying, just as when driving, is a lack of situational awareness. Just as the finest set of automotive brakes will not prevent a crash if not applied in time, the very best defensive gear is practically useless if we're mentally asleep at the wheel. Cues to dangerous situations will present themselves if we're paying attention. Carrying a concealed firearm does not prevent danger or cause threats to swerve out of our way (it is concealed, after all). Instead, we need to pay attention and steer clear of potential dangers.

Snakes on Clays, Yikes!
DON'T TREAD ON ME--Club members at the Petersham Gun Club, MA, were recently surprised to find this Northern Water Snake (Natrix sipedon sipedon) snoozing on top of the trap machine in the trap house. With a little coaxing, the snake beat a dignified retreat beneath the floor boards, and trap shooting commenced! Photo by Kris Congdon.

Thought on CCWs 10/10/12
Apparently, enough American gun owners are making their feelings known to the politicians, because the majority of states have enacted laws that permit some form of CCW permits. Better yet, there is a bill under consideration that would require all states to honor permits issued by other states. This is a positive step forward and is much closer to the day when every American can be licensed to carry if he or she so chooses. I have no trouble understanding the intent of the 2nd Amendment, but politicians sometimes have difficulty fully grasping some very simple language. So we have to spend all kinds of time and money. OK, so be it-but we are making progress.
