2015 Recap of Founders' Day Hall of Fame Assembly

To honor the values and mission of the school's founders, The Colorado Springs School inducted four new members into the Hall of Fame last month.
The distinguished honorees included:
Andy and Lynn Handford, former faculty from 1980 -1997
Susan Barker Day '70 (posthumously), nurse and musician
Powys Gadd '75, archaeologist

Head of School, Mr. Aaron Schubach presided over the ceremony and gave a tribute to the Handfords. Adventure, inclusivity and fun underscored the stories shared by Mr. Schubach. He spoke about Andy's love of the outdoors, his legendary Experience Centered Seminars, and his math puns. Lynn and Andy are a "team" and many years of dormitory students were incredibly lucky to call them dorm parents. Since Lynn and Andy were unable to stay for the entire ceremony, Mr. Sam Johnson read their acceptance speech and Mr. Greg Johnson and Melissa Hafter received the honor on their behalf.

Student Council President, Kristen G. '16 and fellow senior, Claire S. '16 read tributes for Susan Barker Day '70 and Powys Gadd '75.

Ms. Day's dear friends Lisa Dortch, Karen Crawford and classmate Sandra Elliott '70 accepted her honor. Ms. Elliott eloquently and emotionally shared that she and Susan had been friends for 58 years and she reminded students to value friendships and care for the friends seated next to them. She also conveyed that Susan would have encouraged them to make memories and embrace opportunities for learning. In Ms. Day's passing she gifted the school $380,000 from her estate for scholarships in her father's memory. Jim Day was a founding trustee of the school.

As a nationally-recognized archaeologist, Powys Gadd '75 shared with students a story of struggle and success. She shared heartache --- having been labeled as slow and dumb in public school as a result of learning challenges with dyslexia. After gaining entrance and earning a scholarship to The Colorado Springs School in 1971 she experienced the joy of learning and felt valued and self-confident for the first time in school. CSS changed her life and allowed her to pursue her dreams of becoming an archaeologist and working outdoors.

The Vocal Ensemble sang The Script's Hall of Fame in a fitting tribute for the Hall of Fame honorees and Mr. Sam Johnson led the house in singing the school's alma mater.

Complete tributes and acceptance speeches can be read on the school's blog.

Following the ceremony, Powys Gadd '75 shared her expertise as an archaeologist with 4th and 5th grade students. She set up an archaeological site on the quad for the students to investigate and conduct research.
